Subject: [InFounta] INFOUNTA Digest, Vol 5, Issue 2 - Mrs. Harriet Jones
Karen - Found some information on your Mrs. Harriet Jones, who died in a
fire.
Found in 1900 census - Richland Township, Fountain County, Indiana
Harriet Jones - age 66, born Sep 1833 in Ohio, Head of Household, father
born in Virginia, mother born in Ohio, 5 living children out of 7, widowed
Living in house with her is a son, James B. Jones - age 28, born Nov 1871
Indiana, both parents born in Ohio
Also living in house is step-daughter, Mary N. Jones - age 36, born Dec 1863
in Indiana, father born in Ohio, mother born in Indiana.
Also is Joseph Leath, laborer
This census would indicate that Harriet married a Mr. ?? Jones sometime
between 1863 and 1871 and that Mr. Jones was married previously.
She was not found in any newer census, which could mean that she may have
died between 1900 & 1910 or that she remarried or moved away.
She is again found in the the 1880 census living in Richland Township,
Fountain County, Indiana. However, she is listed as 38 yrs. old, born in
1842 in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio. She is married to Levi G. Jones,
age 60, born 1820 in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio and is a blacksmith.
Children in the home include Alonzo, age 24, born abt 1856 in Indiana; Mary
N., age 13, born 167 in Indiana, and Berty, age 8, born abt 1872 in Indiana.
There are also 3 step-children of Levi: William Pogne, age 24, born abt 1856
in Indiana; Sarah E. Pogne, age 22, born abt 1858 in Indiana and Frank
Pogne, age 19, born abt 1861 in Indiana.
With the information from the 1900 census, it would seem that Harriet
married Levi between 1861 and 1863.
I do not find Harriet or Levi before 1880 or after 1900. Perhaps, this will
enough info that someone else may know or find something. If nothin else, we
may have some time frames for her.

Mrs. Harriet JONES
Obituaries of Fountain County, Indiana p 18
On Thursday morning of last week the good citizens of near Steven's Station
in Richland Twp were horror stricken when the news reached them that Mrs.
Harriet JONES had been burned to death. It seems that after doing her
morning household duties, she had decided to burn some rubbish which had
accumulated in the yard and garden and had started a fire in a field south
of the orchard. Her eye sight was badly impaired and it is supposed she
accidently caught her clothing on fire and started for the well, which was
about 100 rods (1,650 feet) from the burning brush pile. All along the
pathway fragments of clothing were found which indicated that she had
attempted to tear off her clothing to extinguish the flames. She reached the
well, as the prints of her bleeding hands were visible on the pumphandle,
but the fire had such a start that it was impossible for her to put it out.
The charred body was found near the well, with scarcely any clothing on it
at all.
Funeral services were held Friday and the body was laid to rest in the
Baptist Cemetery near Waynetown.
