I am trying to find an ancestor, the info I have is this:
William WHITE born about 1810 in VA
married Martha Jane ? maiden name? born about 1820
death certificate of one daughter gives mother's maiden name as: Martha (Jane)
Gillsland
I found a marriage of a William White and a Mary Ann Billsland on April 5, 1837, married
in Fountain, IN
--this would fit the date the couple likely were married
--considering the misspellings of copying old records; Martha Jane Gillsland could be
copied as Mary Anne Billsland
William and Martha had one daughter also named Martha born before 1841 when son James
William White was born
1850-- Census has the family in Bartholomew County, IN with children:
Martha born before 1841 place unknown
James born 1841
Verilla, Vernila??? born 1844 or 46
I know that James and Vernilia were born near Columbus, IN Sand Creek township or
division
1860 -- the family was in Sullivan Co. IN where they appeared in the 1870 and 1880
censuses. after the 1880 census, I lost William and Martha
So my question is; or should say-- my assumption is: I am unsure whether the Fountain, IN
refers to the county of Fountain or the town of Fountain (City)
If William was born in VA, then Fountain (City) IN would more likely be where he married
and then went to Bartholomew co. IN
rather than have then married in Fountain County, IN, but I am checking Fountain County
to see if any one recognizes my info.
What info would be on the marriage certificate, would one be available for Fountain
County?, Would their be a marriage certificate in the courthouse for about the
1840"s?
Hope someone can give me some help or direction.
thanks,
Ellen
