John S. Martin was born October 6, 1847, departed this life May 27, 1910
aged 62 years, 7 months, and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Tersey
Jane Alkire, October 12, 1872. To this union were born ten children, two
dying in infancy, and two dying after marriage. Mollie, at the age of nineteen,
and Susie at the age of 32 years. The other children, Myrtie, Edward, Jacob,
Amos, Riley, and Virgie, being at his bedside at the time of his death.
He united with the Salem M. E. church about the year 1870. He was a man
of exalted purity, moral character, and without a single vicious habit.
He was the victim of no base appetite, and was the incorruptible and an
incorruptible and an honest man, exemplary as a devoted and sincere Christian.
He was a kind and loving husband, and an indulgent father. Hew as generous
and willing as a neighbor, and loyal to charity, who never turned form
his door until bountifully lade. In his sickness and suffering he bored
his trials with patience and fortitude, calmly trusting in the great and
everlasting God, the giver of every good and perfect gift.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. South, at the Salem church
(Troy Township, Fountain County, IN) at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29. The long
procession of sorrowing friends followed all that was mortal of that beloved
on the Prescott cemetery, where the body was laid to rest.
