Journal Review 1-Oct-1962, pg. 1- Rites Wednesday For Teacher Dead in Hillsdale
Crash- VEEDERSBURG- Funeral rites for Harold Abernathy, 24, Rt. 2 Veedersburg,
fatally injured in an auto collision near Hillsdale early Sunday, are set for 2
p.m. Wednesday t the Bodine-Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. Rev. Alfred Dobbs
will officiate, with burial in the Coopers Cemetery. Abernathy, a school teacher,
was en route home from visiting his girlfriend when his car struck one driven
by Mary Jane Bowman, 39, Montezuma, with whom was riding Madonna Billings, 56,
also of Montezuma. Both women were listed as in serious condition but improving
Monday night in Union Hospital at Terre Haute. Abernathy died there at 4:15
a.m. Sunday. Abernathy was in his second year of teaching at Elkhart High
School. He was an auto mechanics teacher in the industrial education department
of that school. He was graduated from Indiana State College, Terre Haute, in
1961 with a bachelor of science degree. He was a 1958 graduate of Perrysville
High School. While a college senior, his practice teaching was done in Crawfordsville.
Abernathy was born Aug. 8, 1938, son of Manford and Madeline Julian Abernathy.
The parents survive and reside at Rt. 2, Veedersburg, with a daughter, Sharon,
15. Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Judith Marlene Brasker of Rt. 2,
Veedersburg; a brother, Lucky John, of Williamsport; paternal grandmother,
Florence Abernathy of Rt. 2, Veedersburg, and a grandfather, John Julian of Rt.
1, Covington, and several nieces and nephews.
