Crawfordsville Journal Review 9-May-1962 1- Maria E. Fine Dead At 102- Rites For Wallace
Resident Thursday- WALLACE- Mrs. Marie E. Fine, widow of Jacob E. Fine, died at 1 p.m.
Tuesday in her home here. She was 102, oldest resident of this community. She was a
daughter of Samuel and Catherine Clodfelter. Fine was born near Wallace March 3, 1860. Her
husband, whom she married in Wallace March 17, 1881, died at 94 on March 16, 1953. Mrs.
Fine had been in failing health for the last five months. She was educated in the Jackson
Township schools of Fountain County. She was a member of the Lutheran Church near here, a
charter member of its Ladies Aid Society and a charter member also of Wallace OES Chapter
415. For as long as health permitted Mrs. Fine was active in church, school and community
affairs. In recent years she was more and more confined to her home, but she enjoyed
watching television and having company. Two years ago she said, of her 100th
birthday, “I never thought I’d make it… What do you think of that?” Nearly all her life
was spent in this community, although she traveled in neighboring states with her husband.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Frankie, in infancy, and a
son, Earl, in World War I. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clark Jones of Crawfordsville;
two sons, Austin, at home, and Clarence of Indianapolis; two granddaughters, Jacqueline
and Amy Fine of Indianapolis, and a niece, Mrs. Daisy Michael of Indianapolis. The body is
being returned to her residence from the Crumley Funeral Home at Hillsboro, and friends
may call beginning Wednesday afternoon. The body will lie in state at the Lutheran Church
for an hour prior to services there at 2 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Richard Graef will officiate,
and burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.
