Crawfordsville Journal Review 31-Dec-1963 8:3- Daisy D. Michael- WAVELAND- Mrs. Daisy D. Michael, 81, of Indianapolis, formerly of this community, died Monday. She had been in failing health the last three years. She was a native of Wallace, born Sept. 19, 1882 to Jasper and Sarah Keller Bruner. She was twice married, to Charles Lowe and to Fred Michael. Both are deceased. Mrs. Michael was a member of the Wallace Christian Church. She lived the last 3 ½ years in Indianapolis, with a son, Charles Kenneth Lowe. Survivors include the son, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services are announced for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Machledt & Servies Funeral Home, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. John Servies will officiate, and burial will be in Wallace Lutheran Cemetery.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 3-Dec-1963 3:7- Hutchison Funeral Held At Hillsboro- HILLSBORO- Rev. Ross Kirk, pastor of the Hillsboro Christian Church, conducted a graveside service at the Oakland Cemetery at Elmdale for Leanne Hutchison, stillborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hutchison of Cincinatti. She was born Nov. 25 at the Bethesda Hospital in Cincinatti. The mother was formerly Miss Annette Donham of Hillsboro and this was their first born. Surviving besides the parents are the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hutchison of Alamo and the maternal grandmother is Mrs. Helen Donham of Hillsboro.
Source Unknown- Death date Dec. 28, 1963- Myrtle Bittner Of Hillsboro Dies In Nursing Home- HILLSBORO- Mrs. Myrtle Bittner, 77, Hillsboro, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the Rudisill Nursing Home in Covington. Mrs. Bittner had resided at the nursing home since June of 1963. Mrs. Bittner was a member of the New Liberty Church near Hillsboro and a member of the Aid Society. Born Dec. 25, 1886, north of Veedersburg, Mrs. Bittner was the daughter of Jonathan and Hester McKinney Butts. On Feb. 20, 1920, she married Clayton Bittner in Covington. Mr. Bittner died May 20, 1954. There were not children. From May, 1954, until she entered the nursing home, Mrs. Bittner made her home with her sister, Mrs. Gertrude Butts of Hillsboro. Mrs. Bittner was one of 11 children and was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters. Survivors included the one sister, Mrs. Butts, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Crumly
Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Rev. Gerald Babb will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 8-Sep-1961 8: 4- Virgie Bennett Succumbs At 61- VEEDERSBURG- Mrs. Virgie A. Bennett, 61, died at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Allen Nursing Home at Attica where she had been a patient the past nine days. She had been in failing health five months and seriously ill two weeks. Born April 17, 1900, in Kingman, she was the daughter of Michael and Ella Hershberger Watts. She married William Bennett, Sept. 11, 1919. Mrs. Bennett was a member of the Veedersburg EUB Church. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Earl of Veedersburg and Robert who is serving with the U.S. Air Force in Newfoundland; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Whitaker of Lafayette; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fishero Funeral Home here with Rev. J. Samuel Pritchard officiating. Interment will be in the Wolf Creek Cemetery near Wallace. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 30-Mar-1961 1: 6- Rites Tuesday For Murder Victim- MELLOTT- Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Phelps will be conducted at 2 p.m. (EST) Tuesday at the Crumley Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Rev. Jack Eitlebuss, pastor of the Mellott Congregational Christian Church, will be in charge. Burial will be in the Wingate Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday afternoon and evening. Mrs. Phelps was found choked to death Tuesday morning in her home at Klamath Falls, Ore. Her husband, Arthur Arnold Phelps, has confessed her slaying, according to Oregon State Police. Mrs. Phelps was a former resident of this community.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 22-Jun-1961 2: 3- Thomas H. Miller Dies In Hospital- KINGMAN- Thomas H. Miller, 76-year-old painter who lived about three and one-half miles northwest of here, died Monday morning in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville. He had been hospitalized 12 days. Born Jan. 27, 1885, in Fountain County, he was a son of Robert and Lear Myers Miller. He was married Feb. 10, 1910 to Leona Alexander. Mr. Miller was a member of the Freedom Church. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Robert of near Kingman; and a sister, Mrs. May Lindquest of Hillsboro. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Woodrow Funeral Home here with Rev. Alfred Dobbs in charge. Interment will be in the Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Tuesday. The family will be at the funeral home from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 8-Sep-1961 3: 2- Henry F. Cooper, Former Resident, Dies At Capital- Henry F. Cooper, a former resident of Crawfordsville and Hillsboro, died Friday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he had been a patient for a week. He was 81. He was retired from the insurance business, and occupation which he had followed in Crawfordsville and Indianapolis. Mr. Cooper was born near Hillsboro and was the son of Miles and Lilly Nicholson Cooper. He married Nina Osborn of Covington, and the couple observed their 50th wedding anniversary recently. Survivors include the widow; one son, Paul Cooper of Indianapolis; two brothers, Marion R. Cooper of Hillsboro and Shirley Cooper of Indianapolis; and two sisters, Mrs. Katie Stuart of Muncie and Miss Mary Cooper, a missionary in Africa. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by two sons. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Shirley Brothers Funeral Home, 946 N.
Illinois St., Indianapolis, with burial to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery here. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 12-Oct-1962 4- John E. Padgett Dies In His Home- VEEDERSBURG- John Emmett Padgett, 73, retired restaurant owner, died Friday morning in his home at Veedersburg. He had been in failing health four and one-half years. Born at Cloverland, Ind., Mr. Padgett was the son of John W. and Sarah Padgett. He married Mabel Kellar Aug. 10, 1911. Mr. Padgett was a member of the EUB Church and a past master of the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge. Survivors include the widow; a son, John Padgett, of Duncan, Okla.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Fishero Funeral Home. Arrangements for the services are incomplete.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 17-Mar-1964 2: 5- Mrs. Lula Bryant, Local Resident, Dies At Age 75- Mrs. Lula Bryant, 75, died suddenly Tuesday morning in her home at 615 Milligan St. Born March 22, 1888, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Bryant was a lifelong resident of Montgomery and Fountain counties. She was the daughter of Luna and Elizabeth Stever Bayless. Mrs. Bryant married Milton Bryant Dec. 15, 1915, and they spent most of their married life in the vicinity of Byron. Mrs. Bryant was a member of the Freedom Church. Mrs. Bryant moved to Crawfordsville after her husband’s death in 1957. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Russell. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lee Miles of Amo, Mrs. Julia Baldwin of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Bernard Rodgers of Lincoln, Neb.; four sons, Ralph of South Bend, Ronald of Dallas, Texas, Milton of Crawfordsville, and Bobby Lee of Bloomingdale; a step-daughter, Mrs. Everett Wrightsman of Guion; 25
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Homer Robinson of Waveland; three half-sisters, Mrs. Elza Bollman of Mooresville, Mrs. Glen Newkirk of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Jake Glascock of Waveland, and three half-brothers, Nelson Bayless, Fred Bayless and Lloyd Bayless, all of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Powers Funeral Home with Rev. John R. Servies officiating. Interment will be in Freedom Cemetery. Crawfordsville Journal Review 12-Mar-1964 8: 4- Funeral For Veeders Fire Victim Held- Funeral Services for Dr. Carl B. McCord, 80-year-old Veedersburg physician and Fountain County Health Officer, who died in a fire that swept through his home in Veedersburg Thursday night, March 5, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fishero Funeral Home. The Rev. J. Samuel Pritchard, pastor of the Veedersburg E. U. B. Church, officiated and burial was in the Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown. Mrs. McCord was away, visiting since Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. Herman (Ona) Smith in Danville, Ill., and the veteran doctor was alone in the two-story, eight room frame residence at 711 N. Walnut St. Claudia Williams, Veedersburg High School junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Williams, who reside next door, saw Dr. McCord try to extinguish the flames and then could no longer see him because of smoke, according to Fountain County Coroner Ralph Nelson. An inquiry and
investigation is in progress by Coroner Nelson, who attributed death to burns and suffocation. It was further believed that Dr. McCord had been smoking while resting on the couch in the living room when the fire burst out. Cause of the blaze has not definitely been determined. It spread rapidly through the house when discovered by Miss Williams about 9:45 p.m. Dr. McCord’s body was found near the front door, indicating he had tried to get outdoors. Veedersburg Volunteer Firemen Carl Butts, Ben Ghormley and Maurice Stonebraker discovered his body when they broke through the locked door. The entire interior of the McCord home was burned out. Veedersburg, Covington and Hillsboro fire fighters stayed at the scene after the recovery of the body to prevent the spread of the flames to other properties. Dr. McCord was a native of near Tangier, born Dec. 27, 1883, the son of William H. and Emily J. Heath McCord. He attended Veedersburg schools from which he
graduated and went to Indiana Medical College. He was married in 1907 in Indianapolis to the former Mabel Coats, who survives. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary June 30, 1957. Dr. McCord had practiced medicine in Veedersburg 56 years. He was a member of the Veedersburg EUB Church, Masonic Lodge No. 491, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Veedersburg Lions Club, and local, state and national medical associations. He had served as the Fountain County Health Officer for many years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: the daughter, Mrs. Smith in Danville, Ill.; one son, Dr. Gwynn McCord, Crawfordsville dentist; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Source unknown, death date March 12, 1964- Harven Bruner, 62, Veeders Resident, Dies At His Home- VEEDERSBURG- Harven Bruner, 62, a retired truck driver, died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in his home on Rt. 3, Veedersburg. He had been ill for many years before his death. A long-time Veedersburg resident, Mr. Bruner was born in Fountain County near Wallace on May 15, 1901, the son of Samuel and Mary Keller Bruner. Mr. Neal [sic] married Eleanor Philpott. He was a member of the Freedom Christian Church near Wallace. Mr. Neal [sic] was preceded in death by a daughter. Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Kathleen Adkins of Kingman and Mrs. Mary Alice Shaffer of Wallace; four sons, Max and Robert, both of Newtown, Reid of Lafayette and Wayne of Youngstown, Ohio; two brothers, Ira Burner of Waynetown and Vern Bruner of Darlington; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Wilsong of Wallace, and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the
Freedom Church near Wallace. Rev. Alfred Dobbs, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery near Wallace. Friends may call at the Sever Funeral Home in Veedersburg all day Friday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 23-Aug-1963, 3- Lenora Mize Is Dead At 92- Hillsboro Resident Was Wallace Native- HILLSBORO- Mrs. Lenora J. Mize, 92, a resident of Hillsboro since 1945, died Thursday in her home. She was born in Wallace on June 12, 1871, and her parents were Eli and Delphina Bowers Myers. In 1887 she married Charles Clark. In 1908 she was married to Charles Ferguson who died in 1939. Then, in November of 1943, she married Dan Mize. She was a member of the Wallace Lutheran Church and lived in Vincennes before moving to Hillsboro. Survivors include her husband; two brothers, Alva Myers of Hillsboro and Hamilton Myers of Covington; a sister, Mrs. Marinda Suitors of Marshall; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Clark; two infant children, and a brother, Everett Myers. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Crumley Funeral Home with Rev. John
C. Stacy of Crawfordsville officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Wallace. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday afternoon and evening.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 9-Mar-1964, 6: 2- Mrs. Ella Booe, Veedersburg, Dies In Nursing Home- VEEDERSBURG- Mrs. Ella Booe, 80, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Cardinal Nursing Home at South Bend. Mrs. Booe, a life-long resident of this community, had been spending the winter with a daughter, Mrs. Melba Edwards, of South Bend when she became seriously ill. She was born Sept. 5, 1882 at Veedersburg, a daughter of Harry and Priscilla Dawson Mettee. She married Ed Booe of Veedersburg Dec. 7, 1898. He died April 1, 1957. Survivors include the daughter at South Bend and two sons, Robert of Danville, Ill. and Joseph of Benton Harbor, Mich. She was preceded in death by three sons and two daughters. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fishero Funeral Home here. Interment will be in Rockfield Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Monday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 29-Feb-1964, 2: 2- Paul Long, 71, Dies Suddenly At Hillsboro Home- HILLSBORO- Paul Long, 71-year-old prominent resident of this community, sustained a fatal heart attack at 2:30 p.m. Friday at his home. Mr. Long, who had been washing the family automobile, sustained the fatal seizure in the basement of his home. His body was found by his wife, Reed. A native of Hillsboro and a life-long resident of the community, he was a retired farmer. He was a director and vice-president of the Hillsboro State Bank. A charter member of the Fountain County Co-Op and Farm Bureau, he had been a Farm Bureau director since it was organized. He also was a member of the Hillsboro Christian Church and was an elder in the church. Born March 26, 1892 near Hillsboro, he was the son of Everett and Ellen Myer Long. He was twice married. He first was married Feb. 4, 1914 to Lela Hersberger, who died Aug. 28, 1932. On March 27, 1954 he was married to
Reed Janeway, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Harold and Fred, both of Crawfordsville; a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Hall of near Veedersburg; a brother, Thurman of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. June Campbell of Lafayette, and Mrs. Mary Starnes of Crawfordsville; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Christian Church here with Rev. Ross Kirk officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at Crumley Funeral Home here Saturday evening and after 3 p.m. Sunday. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.
