John F. "Scotty" Stewart
John F. "Scotty" Stewart, 77, 1002 Fourth St., Covington, died at
10:30p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Covington Manor Nursing Home, Covington, where
he had been a patient for one week.
He was born Sept.13, 1908, in Bellsell, Scotland, the son of
John F. and Jean Smith Stewart. He was married to Edith L. Rudolph on April 11,
1934 in Franklin, Ky. She survives.
He came to the United States in 1923. He was a former
resident of Buffalo, N.Y., Clinton, Iowa and Brevard, N.C. He had been a
resident of Covington since 1956. He was formerly employed by DuPont for 22
years and Olin Corp. from 1951 to 1972,
when he retired as manufacturing superintendent at Covington. He was a 35-year
member of Western Star Lodge, 100 F.&A.M. of Clinton.
Surviving besides his wife, are two sons, John F.. Stewart,
Jr., Covington, and James H. Stewart, Columbia, S.C.; five grandchildren; a
brother, Hugh Stewart, Claymont, Del., and a sister, Mae Stocking, Slat Lake
City, Utah.

Bertha Anna Shultz
Bertha Anna Shultz, 95, Newtown, died at her residence
Thursday, July 17, at 7:02 p.m., having been ill one and a half years.
She was born at Abbingdon, Va.., Nov. 28, 1890, the daughter
of James L. and Isabella Barr Crowell McCauley. Shad lived most of her life in
the Newtown area. She was married Sept. 27, 1916, at Abbingdon, Va., to Andrew
A. Shultz, who preceded her in death July 13, 1959.
She attended school at Abbingdon, Va. She was employed at
Radio Materials Corporation, Attica, for about 10 years. She was a member of
the Newtown Community Church, Home Economics Club and the women's society of
the church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Virginia) Slauter,
Crawfordsville, and Mrs. R.H. (Viola) Hunnings, Connersville; one foster son,
Lawrence Kirkpatrick, Route 1, Attica; three grandchildren; three
great=grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. One foster son, Myron
Kirkpatrick, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Newtown
Community Church with the Rev. James E. Byerly officiating.
Mrs. Kathryn Cushman sang "How Great Thou Art" and
"The Lord's Prayer", accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Sharon Bacon.
Those who served as pallbearers were Mark Hall, R.H.
Hunnings II, Wally Hooker, Art Hayman, Scott Bowers, Bradley Hunnings and Paul
Spear. Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Kirkpatrick and Rolly Butler. Burial
followed in Newtown Cemetery.
Maus Funeral Home, Attica, Attica, was in charge of
arrangements.

Russell Parliment
Russell Parliament, 83, Sidell, Ill., died at his home at
7:10 a.m. Friday, July 18.
He was born on Aug. 14, 1902, in Broadlands, Ill., the son
of Charles and Eva Evans Parliament. He was married Dec. 31, 1921, in Danville,
Ill., to Etta Reed. She survives.
He retired in February 1968, after 32 years with the Sidell
and Federal North Iowa Grain Companies.
Surviving, besides his wife, are one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd
(Mary Alice) Davis, Georgetown; three sons. Charles M., Milwaukee; Robert D.,
Danville, and Russel L., Indianapolis;
one brother, Oscar A. (Butch). Covington; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers
and two sisters.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Honnold and
Son Funeral Home, Sidell, Ill., with the Rev. Ralph Demming of the Sidell
Baptist Church officiating. Burial was
in Faairview Cemetery, Sidell.

Floyd V. "Beanie" Mortimore
Floyd V. "Beanie" Mortimore, 70, Mellott, died T
2:45 P.M. Thursday, July 17 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill.
He was born Aug. 3, 1915, in Mellott, the son of Charles and
Tessie Hybarger Mortimore. He married Josephine Pattengale on June 26, 1937 at
Hillsboro. She survives.
He was a 1933 graduate of Mellott High School. He served
with Civilian Conservation Corp. in Wallace, Idaho, from 1935-1937. He was a
member of the Mellott United Church of Christ and the Tri-County Firemen. He
was a former chief of the volunteer fire department and worked for a number of
years with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He worked at Harrison Steel Castings
Co.., Attica, for 43 years, retiring in 1980 as chief inspector.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Jerry L.,
Mellott, and Ronald G., Cody, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Anno, Lafayette, and
Mrs. Ruth Button, Mellott, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at
Crumley-Williams Funeral Home, Hillsboro, with the Rev. William Chapman
officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mary K. Maxfield, 81, Route 2, Kingman, died at 8:30 a.m.
Thursday, July 17, at Regional Hospital, Terre Haute.
She was born June 25, 1905, in Atherton, the daughter of
John and Veronica Gruse Kravetts.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary L. Osborn, Kingman; a
son, Alvin Maxfield, Mecca; four grandchildren, ; five great-grandchildren;
three sister, Mrs. Helen Montgomery and Mrs. Nellie Sills, both of South Bend,
and Mrs. Katherine Shovely, Detroit, Mich. And a brother, Andy Kravetts, Atherton.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Barnes
Mortuary, Rockville, with Glen Ray, Sr., officiating. Burial was in Memory
Garden.

Mayme S. Lee
Mayme S. Lee, 105, of 507E. Pike St., Attica, died at Meadow
Heights Nursing Center, Willliamsport, Sunday, Jul 20, at 10:40 p.m., having
been in serious health since April of 1986.
She was born in Santa Cruz, Calif., April 19, 1881, the daughter
of Alexander and Solfrania McCampbell Strong. She had formerly lived in Parke
County, Green Township, and came to Attica in 1970. She was married Nov. 25,
1915, in Guion, Ind., to Maurice Franklin Lee, who preceded her in death in
1952.
She was a graduate of Bloomingdale Academy, Bloomingdale,
Ind. And was a housewife. She was a member of he Rockville Presbyterian Church,
charter member of Judson Chapter Order of Eastern Star, D.A.R., Rockville, and
Federated Club in Parke County. She enjoyed ccrocheting and quilting.
Surviving are one son, Francis G. Lee, Attica, three
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One brother and four sisters also
preceded her in death.
Friends may call at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, from 5 to
9 p.m. today (Tuesday). OES services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services
will be held in the Maus Chapel at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Kenneth Burris
officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Terre Haute.

Thomas S. Hatton
Thomas S. Hatton, a 64-year resident of Albuquerque, N.M.
died July 5 in Manzano del Sol Nursing Center.
He was born July 13, 1896 in Attica, the son of Joseph B.
and Effie Hatton. He was married to Reva Harry in 1969. She died in 1980.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Albuquerque, Sigma Pi Fraternity, the Wabash Masonic Lodge No. 708, Attica for
64 years and was a member of American Legion Post 13 for over 60 years.
He graduated from Attica High School in 1914, attended
Purdue University from 1915-1917, was in the US. Navy Band under the direction
of John Phillip Sousa and spent time in 1918 in Murmansk and Archangel in
Russia, north of the Artic Circle. After his discharge from the Navy, he again
attended Purdue from 1920-1922.
Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Zack
Clem, Jr., former Covington residents; a cousin Marcia Hatton, all of
Albuquerque, and a stepson, Glenn Harry, and family, Ponca City, Okla. He was
also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Blanche, who died in 1980.
Funeral services were held July 8 at 2:30 p.m. in Palm
Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary with the Rev. David Jones officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Iva Mae Nance Gerard
Iva Mae Nance Gerard, 76, Route 1, Covington, died at 4:30
p.m. Thursday, July 17, at her home.
She was born July 26, 1909, in Sidney, Ill., the daughter of
Albert and Minnie Swaney. She married Edmond N. Nance. He preceded her in death. She married
William L. Gerard in December 1930. He survives.
She was a nurses' aide at the Vermillion County Nursing Home
of Danville. She enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing.
Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Jean
Long and Mrs. Wilma DeMoss, both of Danville,; 11 grandchildren, 13
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil Swaney, Champaign, Ill., and Herman
Swaney, Catlin, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Gale Fancher, Champaign and Mrs. June
Lane, Danville. She also was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and
a sister.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Barrick
& Son Funeral Home, Danville, with the Rev. Dennis Rogers officiating.
Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville.

LaGretta Epperson
LaGretta Epperson, 82, 701 N. Perry St., Attica, who had
been residing at Meadow Heights Nursing Center, Williamsport, died there
Saturday, July 19, at 12:40 p.m. She
had been ill two and a half months.
She was born at Attica, July 4, 1904, the daughter of Dwight
and Edna Mae Songer Epperson. She had lived all of her life in Attica and
attended the Attica school. She was a
former seamtress at the Louis Nathan Pants Factory and was later a babysitter.
She was a member of the Attica Christian Church.
Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Irene Brown, Danville, Ill.;
two brothers, Raymond Epperson, Auburndale, Fla., and Robert Epperson,
Lafayette. Several brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at the Maus Funeral Home,
Attica, today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. with the Rev. James Boudouris
officiating. Burial will follow in
Riverside Cemetery, Attica.

A Fountain County native, Mrs. Summers was born Jan 17, 1881 to Samuel B. and Alice Krout Day. She married John M Summers Jan 4, 1899. He preceded her in death. Surviving besides the daughter, are 14 grandchildren, including Ed Powers of Veedersburg, who was reared from early childhood by Mrs. Summers and several great grandchildren. She was a member of Centennial UB Church. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday at Parham Funeral Home, where services are announced for 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Mrs. Edith Bruner officiating. Burial will be in Centennial Cemetery.

Mr. Thompson was born in 1905 at Tangier, a son of MIles and Martha Weaver Thompson. He was employed by the Woolworth firm for 47 years. Surviving are his wife, Lillian; a son, James of Indianapolis, a daughter, Mrs. Sue Fisher of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, 3 sisters, Dr. Florence Thompson of Terre Haute and Mrs. Harry Tunin and Mrs. Carl Sloan, both of Kingman; a brother, Eugene of Rockville, and a half-brother, Seth Woods of LaPorte. Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Flanner & Buchanan, Broad Ripple Mortuary. Graveside rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rushcreek Cemetery near Kingman.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 29 APril 1963 p 2 -- Veedersburg - Mrs. Mary Alice Lang, 61-year-old life-long resident of this community, died at 4:40 a.m. Sunday (April 28) in Lakeview Hospital at Danville, Ill where she had beena patient 7 hours. Death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Lang had been employed as a cook at the Highland Court Restaurant the past year. She was a member of the Veedersburg Nazarene Church. She was born Feb 10, 1902 in Warren County, a daughter of Albert B. and Sarah Jane Troxell Baldwin. She married Edward Lang in 1933. He died in October 1960. Surviving are two sons, Jack of Rt 1, Veedesrburg and Glenn of Rt 2, Kingman; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Clawson of Veedersburg; two stepsons, Gerald Lang of Depot Bay, Ore and Norval Lang of Tuscola, Ill; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Fauniel Hollenbeck of Indianapolis; a brother, ALbert (Jack) Baldwin of Veedersburg; four sisters, Mrs. Faye Griffin, Mrs. Alberta Craig and Mrs. India Woods all of Veedersburg and Mrs. Phoebe Miller of Portland and six grandchildren. Funeral rites are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Nazarene Church here with Rev. DL Hiatt officiating. Interment will be in the Harveysburg Cemetery near Kingman. Friends may pay their respects at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home at Covington after noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 13-May-1963 p 10 -- Homer Milton Newcomb, 54, operator of the Midway service station at Yeddo for 12 years died about 10 p.m. Friday May 10, 1963. Mr. Newcomb was stricken with a heart attack at Turkey Run State Park where he had recently started work with the park service. He was pronounced dead at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville. Born Oct 21, 1908 at Rowland, Ky he was a son of Nathan and Sally Moore Newcomb who preceded him in death. Survivors are his wife, Geraldine Brooks, whom he married Oct 26, 1929, a son George of Kingman Rt 1, a daughter, Mrs. Emmalee Rutledge of Kingman, a brother, George of England and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth York of St. Berniece, and Mrs. hattie Beard of Goodland. Mr. Newcomb was a member of the Yeddo Masonic Lodge 636, Eastern Star 313 and Wallace Low 12s. Services wre at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Centennial EUB Church on US 41 north of Kingman. The Rev. lawrence Beebe of Lovington, Ill officiated with Rev. Robert Carey, pastor of the Centennial Church assisting. Burial in Friends Chape Cemetery at Scotland, Ill. The Davies-Tudor Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 16-May-1966 p 2 -- Hillsboro - Charles Robert (Chuck) Glascock, 38-year-old former employee of the Journal-Review and resident of Schoolcraft, Mich died suddenly at 8 pm. Saturday in Michigan. He was a son of Charles and Mabel DInsmore Glascock and was born near Hillsboro on May 22, 1927. Mr. Glascock was married to Marihelen Crowder May 9, 1947. A resident of Schoolcraft the past 5 years he moved there from Portage, Mich. Mr. Glascock moved to Portage from the Hillsboro area. He was employed in the advertising department at the Journal-Review. Funeral rites will be at 2 p.m. prior to moving to Portage. He was with the Portage Herald for four and one-half years and worked for the Federal Housing Administration at Schoolcraft. Mr. Glascock was a member of the Scotts prairie Christian Church hear here. Survivors include the widow and four sons all at home; Sam, Tony, Andy, and Nick. Funeral rites will be at 2 a.m. Wednesday at Crumley-Williams Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Mullen, 80, a Covington Manor Nursing Home resident, and formerly of Veedersburg, died 3:55 p.m. Thursday in Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, Logan Campus, Danville, Ill. Mrs. Mullen was a store clerk at Covington and Veedersburg and retired from the IGA store at Attica in 1978. Her memberships included the New Century Church near Veedersburg, Covnigton Senior Citizens and BWI Horizons Club. She was born Feb 18, 1920 in Fountain County to Dempsey and Bessie Payton Carr. She was first married to Leslie Day. He is deceased. She then married Carl Mullen July 30, 1966 at Covington. He died in 1989. Surviving are a daughter, Zelma Lewin, Maryland, a son, Dwayne Day, Maryland; two stepsons, Thomas J. Mullen and Carl R. Mullen, both of Lafayette; a brother, Leroy "Bob" Carr, Bloomingdale; a sister, Susie Lindquist, Veedersburg; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. A daughter, Marcia Newnum, six brothers, a sister and two grandchildren are deceased. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg with Rev. Richard Throckmorton officiating. Burial in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call 4-8 pm. Saturday in the funeral home.

p2 -- Veedersburg - Arthur A. Grimes, 53, died Monday morning in Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville. He had been in failing health several years and seriously ill two weeks. Mr. Grimes was employed by Marshall Studios here and was a member of the Methodsit Church here. Born March 23, 1912, in Fountain County, he was a son of Bert C. and Ellen Price Grimes. He was married to Vivna (sic) Allen, who died last July 2. His only immediate survivors are three brothers, Hollis A. of Winchester and Robert M. and Leland H both of Veedersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister. The body was brought to Parham Funeral Home wehre friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rites are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday in Methodist church here. Rev. Mrs. Edith Bruner will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church an hour preceding the services. Burial in Fraternal Cemetery, Kingman.

She attended school No. 11 near her home in the Horseshoe community west of Cayuga. During her early teens she became a member of the Friends Church. Born June 14, 1880, in the Horseshoe community, she was a daughter of Jack and Sarah GOuld Youmans. She was married Oct 4, 1900 to Charley Switzer. He died Nov 1, 1955. Survivors include the daughter with whom she made her home; three grandchildren, Charles B. Goff of New market; Mrs. Ruby Merryman of Hillsboro and Mrs. Edwin L. Brown of Tampa, FL; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren, 4 stepgrandchildren, 16 great step grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m.Sunday at the Lutheran Church east of Wallace with Rev. Joseph Youmans of Noblesville officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the residence of Mrs. Merryman one mile north of Wallace on Ind 341 after noon Saturday.
