Crawfordsville Journal Review 9 May 1970 p 5 --Kingman, Ind - Mrs. Mary June Allen, 46 of Kingman Rt 2 died Friday afternoon May 8, 1970 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill. She had been in ill health several months and hospitalized the past week. She was born Dec 6, 1923 to Franklin and Sarah Clift Hoover. She was married to Leon Allen in 1956. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Yeddo Baptist Church and graduated from Kingman HS in 1941. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, and son, both at home; her mother, Mrs. Sarah Hoover of Crawfordsville; a brother Lawrence Hoover of Crawfordsville and 3 sisters, Mrs. Sarah Thornberry of Crown Point, Mrs. Opal Hutts of Bloomington and Mrs. Rozella Lowery of Anderson. Services will be conducted at Woodrow Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery near Wallace. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 27 April 1970 p 4 - Newtown - Borden Abolt, 74, a life resident of Newtown, died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Lafayette after an illness of two years. A retired farmer, he was born June 6, 1895 near Newtown, a son of Marion and Martha Miller Abolt. On March 11, 1920 he was married to Mary Ann Marr at Covington. Mr. Abolt was a member of HOpewell Baptist Church here and the Fish & Game Club. He attended Newtown schools. Survivors include his wife, three sons, Marvin D. of near Covington, Milford of Newtown and Robert Lee of Attica; a sister, Mrs. Oveta Smith of near Newtown and 8 gradnchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Crumley-Willads Funeral Home at HIllsboro, with Rev George Phelps officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Friends may call at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 27 April 1970 p 4 -- Veederburg - Elmer Crowder, 86, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Lakeview Memorial Hospital, Danville, Ill. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill one week. He resided at 113 W. Washington Street with his son, Wallace. Mr. Crowder was born in Indiana, May 28, 1883, to James B. and Martha Allen Crowder. He was married in January 1904 to Artie Wallace who died Feb 5, 1957. Surviving in addition to the son with whom he made his home are 5 other sons, Ivan of Wallace, Eston of Steamboat, Col; Freeman of Terre Haute, Harold of Kokomo, and Otis of Bloomingdale; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Lyons of Lafayette and Mrs. Irene Massey of Oakwood, Ill; a sister, Mrs. Dessie Norris of Kingman; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fishero Funeral Home with Rev. Broten Martin officiating. Burial will be in Centennial Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 13 April 1970 -- Kingman - Loyd "Jack" Brown, 78, a former teacher at Kingman died Friday at Fortsville. He was born Nov. 14, 1901 near Tangier, a son of Thomas and Etta Gilkey Brown. He was married at Kingman June 28, 1923 to Josie Carter who survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Rex and Ned of Anderson and Tom of Colorado; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jean Kincade of Indianapolis; two brothers, John of Terre Haute and Leo of Indianapolis; and three sisters, Mrs. Dora Hunt of Tangier, Mrs. Sally Starkey of Stone Bluff, and Mrs. Ada Cristie of Montezuma. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Fortsville with burial in Fortsville Cemetery.

She was born Oct 19 1901 in Vermillion County a daughter of Will S. and Libba Myers Bumgardner. On June 21, 1925 she married Luke A. Morgan who survives. She was a membe rof the 7th Street Church of Christ and had resided in Covington and Perrylsville areas since her marriage. She was graduated from Fayette HS at New Goshen. Survivors include a son, Donald of Santa Ana, Claif; two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Spizey of Milford, Ohio and Mrs. Mariam McCubbin of Covington; three brothers, Bernard of Montpelier, Paul of Indianapolis and leon of Pontica, Mich; a sister, Miss Helen Bumgardner of Covington and 7 grandch. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Bodine &Shelby Funeral Home with Nyal D. Royse and Derald Ailes officiating. Burial will bein Mt. Hope Cemetery. Crawfordsville Journal Review 14 April 1970 p 3 -- Cates - Mrs. Icy J. Lindley 82, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill, at 8 p.m. Sunday. She had been a patient 11 days and ill the last 4 months. Mrs. Lindley was born on Aug 4, 1888 in Fountain County to Austin and Mary Shultz Parrent. On Dec 17, 1904 she married Fred Lindley, who died Jan 16, 1960. Mrs. Lindley was a member of the Cates United Methodist Church, Cates Camp 4425 RNA, Cayuga Chapter of the American War Mothers and Cates Home Demonstration Club. Survivors include one son, Bernard, Cates; two daughters, Mrs. Reva McKeighan, Cates and Mrs. Fay Cole, Mellott, and 7 grandchildren. Services will be conducted at Cates United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Lucille Esvenshade officiating. Burial will be in Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Crawfordsville Journal Review 3-Apr-1970 p 3-- Covington -Mahlon Dee Bodine, 90, Rt. 2, Veedersburg, died unexpectedly at 11 a.m. Thursday in his home. Mr. Bodine spent his life farming in the Covington vicinity and retired in 1964. He had been in poor health for the past 5 years. Mr. Bodine was born on March 21, 1880, to Lew Wallace and Arabella Grimes Bodine in Wabash Township in Fountain County. In 1906 he married Kate DeHaven. Mr. Bodine's wife and one brother preceded him in death. Survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. Edith auter, Covington; Mrs. Mildred Hoovermale, Rt. 2, Veedersburg and Mrs. Dorothy Rhodes, Battle Ground; one brother, Richard L. Bodine, Covington; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services will be held in the Hegg Funeral Home at Covington at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with Rev. EE McConnell officiating. Crawfordsville Journal Review 1 May -1970 p 4 -- Samuel Bernard "Bus" Leath, 67 of Attica, formerly of Crawfordsville died at 12:15 a.m. Thursday in Community Hospital at Williamsport. He had been in failing health a year and seriously ill since January. Born May 14, 1902, in Attica, he was a son of Samuel and Joanna Meeker Leath. He was married May 27, 1927 at St. Louis to Louise Blanford. Mr. Leath resided in Attica all of his life except for 10 years when he lived lived in Crawfordsville and Michigan City. He was graduated from Attica HS in 1920 and had been superintendent of the pattern shop at Harrison Steel since 1937. He was a member of First United Methodist Church at Attica and had served on its board of trustees. He also was a member of the Attica Public Library Board and was active in Boy Scout work for a number of years. Survivors include his wife, two sons, John of Attica and James of Nashville, Tenn; a daughter, Mrs. Joanna Ruhlman of Cedar Falls, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Robert Parnell of Crawfordsville and MIss Eva Leath and Mrs. Robert Bush of Attica, and 7 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church at Attica with Rev. Harold Bachert officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home. The family suggest those who desire may make a memorial contribution to American Cancer Society.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 16-Mar-1970 p 7 -- Veederburg - Mrs. Flossie A. Morgan, 72, died Sunday (March 15) in St. Elizabeth's Hospital at Danville, Ill. She had been ill for a year and in the hospital for several days. She was born March 16, 1897. She married Glenn Morgan in Covington on Jan 24, 1917. Mrs. Morgan was a member of the United Methodist Church of Stone Bluff. She also belonged to Founatin County Home Extension Association. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Evadna Young and brother, Wayne Barker, both of Veedersburg and a grandson. Services will be conducted by Rev. Earl Carmichael at 2 p.m Wednesday in the United Methodist Church at Stone bluff. Burial will be in Osborn Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call at the Parham Funeral Home here between 2 - 4 and 7-9 on Tuesday.
Karen's scrapbook collection- 1928- Mrs. Glee M'Cormick Died Saturday Morning- Veedersburg, Ind., March 10.- Mrs. Glee McCormick, wife of Morris McCormick, died at her home here Saturday morning at 5 o'clock her death resulting from a severe heart attack suffered a week ago. The deceased was born near Yeddo, July 23, 1885 and was the daughter of Harris and Flora Philpott. Her entire life has been spent in this locality. Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mildred, her parents, and two brothers, Ted and Troy Philpott of Indianapolis. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Christian church of which the deceased was a member. She was also a member of the Valitta chapter of the Eastern Star and for two terms was Worthy Matron of the local chapter. Burial will be made in the Centennial cemetery.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 10-Mar-1934, 8: 6- LAST RITES TO BE CONDUCTED AT 2 O'CLOCK SUNDAY AFTERNOON- Hillsboro, March 9- Mrs. Amanda Ellis, aged 85 years, expired at 6:30 o'clock this evening at her home near Hillsboro following a week's illness. The deceased was born in Parke county Oct. 15, 1848, the daughter of John F. and Barbara Lough Moore. She was married twice, first to Andy Smalley and later to Robert Ellis. Mr. Ellis preceded her in death six years ago. Mrs. Ellis had been a resident of the Hillsboro community for a number of years and was well known throughout this vicinity. She was a member of the Prairie Chapel church, south of here. She is survived by one grandson, Harlie Ellis of Veedersburg; one great-grandson, Dwain Ellis of Covington; one sister, Mrs. Mate Watson of Crawfordsville; a half-sister, Mrs. Ida Taylor of Crawfordsville, and a brother Ab Moore of South Dakota. Funeral services will be conducted from the Prairie Chapel
church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with the Rev. Carrie Beaver, of Advance, officiating. Burial will be at the Masonic cemetery in Waynetown.
Karen's scrapbook collection, 1938- William Lough Rites to Be Held Saturday- Hillsboro, March 18.- Funeral services for William Irving Lough, who passed away Thursday morning, will be held at the family home, south of Hillsboro, at two o'clock Saturday afternoon. Burial will be made at the Rose Hill cemetery here. Mr. Lough, well known resident of this community, died of complications after an illness of several weeks. he was a native of Parke county but spent his married life in Hillsboro and vicinity.
Karen's scrapbook collection- 1934- FLORA PHILPOTT EXPIRES AT HOME- WELL KNOWN HILLSBORO WOMAN DIES OF FRACTURED HIP- Hillsboro, May 14.- Mrs. Flora Philpott, wife of Harris Philpott passed away at the family home three miles south of here this morning. Deaht ocurred at 4:30 o'clock and following an eight months' illness. Uremic poisoning was given as the immediate cause of death. Mrs. Philpott's illness began when she sustained a fractured hip after being struck by a machine driven by her brother, Irve Lough. The mishap occurred in Crawfordsville and Mrs. Philpott was taken to Culver hospital where she was a patient for about two weeks. She was then brought to her home here and had been at the family residence since. Mrs. Philpott was 70 years old and was the daughter of Samuel and Caroline Collins Lough. She was born April 15, 1864, on a farm near Marshall and had spent the greater part of her life in Fountain county. Those surviving are the husband,
two sons, Troy and Ted, Indianapolis; a granddaughter and grandson; two brothers, Nelson and Irve, of Hillsboro, and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Frazier of Indianapolis and Mrs. Laura Purnell of Steam Corner. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. O. W. McGaughey of Veedersburg officiating. Burial will be made in the family lot at Rockfield cemetery.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 15-Nov-1940, 4: 7- LEONA STOCKDALE, AGE 41, IS DEAD - DEATH OF ANTIOCH WOMAN FOLLOWING ILLNESS OF NINE WEEKS- Hillsboro, Nov. 15.- Mrs. Leona Stockdale, 41, of the Antioch neighborhood northeast of here, died at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Ill., at 5:30 o’clock Friday morning. She had been ill nine weeks with arthritis and complications. Mrs. Stockdale was born near Hillsboro on January 18, 1899, the daughter of Aaron and Amanda Moore Wilson. On January 1, 1918, she was married to Guy Stockdale. Mrs. Stockdale was a member of the Prairie Chapel church and was active in the Ladies’ Aid society. She is survived by her husband, her mother, who is now Mrs. Amanda Bilsland of near Mellott; three sons, Harold Guy, George Warren and Gale Stockdale, and two daughters, Verna Marie and Sandra Stockdale, all at home. Also surviving are one brother, Merble Wilson of Lafayette and a half-sister, Mary Catherine Cramer of
Waynetown. Arrangements for the funeral have not been made.
Crawfordsville Journal Review, 19-Nov-1940, 8: 3- OBITUARY- Leona Marie Stockdale, daughter of Amanda and Aaron Wilson, was born in Cain Township Jan. 18, 1899. All her life was spent in and near Hillsboro. On Oct. 17, 1911, she united with the Prairie Chapel church under the minister of Rev. Cash. She was a loyal worker in the different activities of the church having served as president of the Aid society for some time. She spared neither time nor energy to make a success of each undertaking. She was united in marriage with Guy Stockdale on Jan. 1, 1919. To this union were born five children, all at home. They are Harold, Guy, George Warren, Verna Marie, Gale Leon and Sandra Louise, who is only one year old. She had been in poor health for many months. She had been a patient at Lake View hospital in Danville, Ill., for ten weeks where she had suffered intense pain. All that loving relatives and friends and medical skill could do was done, but to no
avail. She passed away Friday, Nov. 15, at 5:20 a.m. at the age of 41 years, 9 months and 27 days. She was a loyal companion and devoted mother. Truly a good neighbor and very dear friend has been called home. Besides the immediate family she leaves her mother; one brother, Merbel Wilson and family of Lafayette; one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Katherine Cramer, of Waynetown, and a host of relatives and friends who will sadly miss her. The family finds great comfort in the words of the poet: [poem]. Funeral services were held from the Prairie Chapel church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Woody at Lebanon officiating. – Card of Thanks – We wish in this way to thank our many friends and relatives for their kindness and sincere sympathy shown us during the long illness and in the death of Mrs. Leona Stockdale, to those who sent flowers and every one who helped us in any way. Indiana Historical Society Welcomes "Photo Detective" Maureen Taylor
Indianapolis-
The Indiana Historical Society is pleased to welcome Maureen Taylor,
also known as "The Photo Detective," to its Frank and Katrina Basile
Theater on Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m. The Eugene and Marilyn Glick
Indiana History Center, home of the IHS, is located at 450 W. Ohio St.
in downtown Indianapolis.
Ms. Taylor, an internationally recognized expert on the intersection of
history, genealogy and photography, has been featured in several top
media outlets, including "Today," "The View," The Wall Street Journal,
Martha Stewart Living and Better Homes & Gardens. She is the author of
numerous books and magazine articles as well as a contributing editor at
Family Tree Magazine.
For the past 10 years, Taylor has employed a variety of diagnostic
techniques, combining genealogy, art history, costume history and
cultural anthropology in her work to date and identify the subjects in
photos. The Wall Street Journal has called her "the nation's foremost
historical photo detective."
Cost for the evening presentation is $10 for the general public and $8
for IHS members. Reservations are recommended, as seating will be
limited. This program has been made possible through a matching grant
from the Indiana Humanities Council in cooperation with the National

Crawfordsville Journal Review 31-Mar-1970 p. 3 -- Veedersburg - Cyril J. Summers, 73, died early Tuesday morning in his home on Rt. 1. He had been in failing health for 4 1/2 months. He was born August 16, 1896, in Fountain County to Joseph M. and Lear E. Waggoner Summers. On Aug 31, 1918, he married Hazel E. Bean of Rockville. Mr. Summers was a retired farmer. He lived in the Scotts Prairie community for 40 yeares and attended the Scotts Prairie Church. He attended the Steam Corner and Cates Elementary Schools. Surviving are his widow; three sons, Earl J. of near Hillsboro, Orval Lee and Harold D. both of near Veedersburg; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Hallett of Waynetown; a brother, J. Marx Summes of Wallace and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Lucille Summers, a brother and sister. Services will be conducted by Rev. James W. Whitaker at 2 p.m. Thursday April 2 in Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Burial will be in Wolfe Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Goldie L. Sowers, wife of Victor Sowers, died early Sunday at their winter home in Deltoa, FL. She was a daughter of Levi and Louisa Morlan Thomas and a native of Putnam County. Mr. Sowers was associated more than 40 years with the DriGas Company of Kingman. Surviving besides the husband are a son, Robert T. Sowers of Kingman, president of the Dri-Gas Co.; a daughter, Mrs. (Phyllis) William Stevenson of Kokomo; a sister, Mrs. Jessie (William) Williamson of N. Terre Haute; and four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sowers was a member of the Kingman Christian Church and Ladies Aid Society and the Deltona Pioneer Club. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church here, where the body (Kingman) will be taken at 1 o'clock. Rev. Larry McMillan will officiate with entombment in the RoseLawn Memorial Cemetery at Terre Haute. Friends may call at the Davies-Tudor Funeral Home in Marshall after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Crawfordsville Daily Journal 10-Jul-1926 p 5: Walter H. Schaeffer, 83, died Thursday afternoon at Greenwood, Ind following an illness of a few months. His widow, Gladys Barker Schaeffer, is a sister of Mrs. Earl Meek, former Crawfordsville resident now residing at Greenwood. The late Faye Ward of Crawfordsville also was a sister of Mrs. Schaeffer's. The Schaeffers former residents of LaPorte, Ind moved to Greenwood five years ago after retirement. He was a veteran of WWI. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wilson Mortuary at Greenwood. Funeral services and burial will be at Dayton, Ohio.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. irene Bassett of Perrysville and Mrs. Dorene Bean of near Perrysville, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Woodrow Funeral Home here with Rev. Alfred Dobbs officiating. Burial will be in Kingman Fraternal Cemetery. Crawfordsville Journal Review 25-Jul-1962 p. 4 -- Thomas Miles Barker, age 51, of Newton, Ill, a former resident of the Kingman and Covington communities died at 8:10 a.m. Thursday July 19 at his residence at 333 East Main Street, Newton. He had been in ill health for the past year. Mr. Barker was born August 4, 1910 in Kingman, the son of Floyd and Ora Hershberger Barker. he was married twice, first to Mrs. Pat Kramer of Covington Rt. 2, and then to Julie Logue of Newton, who survives. He had been a resident of Newton for the past 10 years and prior to that time lived in the Kingman and Covington communities. Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, John Thomas Barker; several brothers and sisters, Morgan Barker of Willow HIll, Ill; Loyd of Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Lila king of Hammond and Orin Barker and a sister, Nellie whose wehreabouts are unknown. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Seesangood Funeral Home in Newton with graveside rites at 4 at Mt. Hope cemetery. The Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home was in cahrge of local arrangements.
