Lisa,
I would also be interested in hearing about your Watkins line. Mine is related but not direct. Yours goes back to Clement, born 1791 in Delaware, and mine is from his brother William. I've taken the family back a couple more generations.
I''ve researched the family for several years, and am always looking for descendants and family photos!

I'm not sure exactly what my help was, but maybe I helped you chisel some of the mortar in that brick wall.
With the help of the court records book that the Fountain County Genealogy Society is selling, I may be able to answer some questions for many researchers. But then, my cemetery records, HISTORY OF FOUNTAIN COUNTY 1881, HISTORY OF FOUNTAIN COUNTY, INDIANA 1983, and all else I have accumulated for my "hobby", I might be able to find answers that otherwise I wouldn't be able to do.
And you are very welcome, Christy.....your gratitude makes this all worthwhile!

I just heard from the fella who believes we have the connection! It looks like Alexander may be a brother and not the father. He believes that John UNDERWOOD and Sallie/Sarah WATSON were his parents.
"Christy, I feel we do have a match. Our cousin Hazel listed Alexander as a pioneer in both Orange Co., Indiana and DuPage Co., IL. She gave the children of John & Sallie Watson as William ca. 1800, Alexander ca. 1809, John, Sarah 10 Feb. 1819, Margaret, Mary. She did not list Thomas, but I have misplaced a piece of paper that named Thomas & Hester regarding land in Will county in 1836. I could only have had that paper by it coming down through my mother & grandmother. Sarah married Barney Kennedy in Will County in 1839 and they went to Oregon about 1847. Alex went to California in 1850 from DuPage county. John went to Buchanan Co., Mo. in 1838 and I believe William & Mary's husband, Jasper Wilson went with John to California driving cattle in 1853. William died in California in 1865. The book "Underwoods in America" takes the line back to the 1600s from John & Sallie. That John died in Orange Co., Indiana in 1820 while running for another term as justice of the peace."
So the 1834 Fulton Township "John" may be another brother. I have found land records in Will County, Illinois, that show a John UNDERWOOD and Thomas UNDERWOOD and Wesley JENKINS (husband of Margaret UNDERWOOD) purchasing a section in 1835! Maybe they sell their land to Thomas/Hester before pulling upn stakes and heading westward again. Both John UNDERWOOD and Wesley JENKINS show up in Bloomington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri, in 1840. So my Thomas/Hester stay in Will County for another decade while the "Jenkins Colony" moves on...in the history of Will County it says that they removed elsewhere and it was not a long-lived colony.
When I started putting everything I knew together with what Bob had, the preponderance of evidence leads me to believe that I may have just broken through my brick wall!
Many, many thanks, Sharon!
Woo-hoo!

Goodness, Sharon, the abilities of seasoned genealogists continue to amaze me.
Yes, the Miram Underwood/Isaac Waldrip marriage is to Hester's brother, the son of Isaac Waldrip/Waldrop (finding it both ways.) Have no idea if she is a sister to Thomas or not.
My great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all named Stephen Alexander UNDERWOOD, so it sounds like this Alexander is who I want to follow. Thank you so much for all your help!

Using the court records book, I find Alexander Underwood and John Underwood as the only Underwoods who were among the first settlers in Fountain County. Alexander lived in Shawnee Township in 1828 and John lived in Fulton Township in 1834.
Hester Underwood's father was Isaac Waldrip? Isaac lived in Shawnee Township. I can find no probate records for Alexander, so he may have died in another county or state. For John, it states that his heirs were Caroline, Maria, Rebecca, James, John and George Underwood. So Thomas was not his son.
Early marriage records show an Elizabeth Underwood who married Noah Clark in 1833, a Miram Underwood who married Isaac Waldrip in 1832, a Nancy Underwood who married a John Harper in 1833, and of course, Thomas who married Hester Ann. The Isaac Waldrip who married Miram Underwood must be the son of the elder Isaac. In a record for Petition for Deed, Larkin Waldrip vs. William Waldrip, et al. The petition was filed on April 22, 1854 and sais that in 1848 Isaac Waldrip executed a title bond to Larkin for 100 acres which stated Isaac or his heirs would sign a deed to Larkin. Isaac died in 1847 and his heirs (including grandchildren) were: Hester, widow; and William, Wesley, Isaac, Henry C., Isaac W., and John W. Waldrip; Thomas Underwood and Hester; Mortimer M. Truitt and Margaret; Mary Ann Birch; Thomas Lewis Sr., and Isaac, Zimri, Preston, Hester and Cynthia Lewis; John Adset and Harriett; Isaac Lewis Sr., John Larkin, Caleb, Susannah, Thomas Jr., and Wesley Lewis, Spencer Th!
ornton and Hester, William Lewis and William H. Jones and Margaret. It also says that the Thorntons, Underwoods, all Lewises and Isaac Jr., John W. and Isaac W., and Henry C. Waldrip were not residents of Indiana at this time.
In the Fountain County cemetery records, I find that some Underwoods are buried in the Zachmire Cemetery which is located in the sw corner of Jackson Township near the Parke County line. Those names are Dina who died in 1834 (broken stone), Elizabeth Ann who died in 1842 5y, John who died in 1860 20y, Lemuel who died in 1846 8y, Phebe w/o Stephen died 1862 55y, Stephen who died 1843 38y, Steph H. who died in 1859 15y, William who died in 1842 1y, and William Alexander who died in 1842 4y.
I notice that Thomas and Hester used the names of Stephen and Alexander in names for their children.
Whatever happened to the Alexander Underwood, the early pioneer in Shawnee Township remains a mystery since he doesn't show in cemetery records. It doesn't say where he came from in the tract records or what year he left.
I can't answer your question of who the parents were of Thomas, but have been able to delete all but this Alexander.

Who were the parents of Thomas UNDERWOOD who married Hester Ann WALDRIP in Fountain County, Indiana on 8 June 1837?
Thomas was my great-great grandfather and brick wall. Here's what I have discovered so far.
1811: All censuses agree that he was born in North Carolina in this year ... but to whom???
1811-1832: Whereabouts unknown
1832: Settled near what would be named Jackson Creek in Will County, Illinois (SEE NOTE BELOW)
1837: Married Hester Ann WALDRIP in Fountain County, Indiana
1840 census: Jackson Township, Will County, Illinois
1850 census: Jackson Township, Will County, Illinois
1860 census: Black Hawk Township, Jefferson County, Iowa
1870 census: Marion Township, Newton County, Missouri
1880 census: Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri -- Thomas is likely dead by 1880 as Hester and a younger sister are living with Stephen Alexander Underwood (my great-grandfather) and his young family in Joplin. A bio of SAU states that he managed the family farm and cared for his mother and younger siblings after his father's death. (Most of the other siblings lived two doors away.)
Note: According to a history of Will County, the so-called "Jenkins Colony" of 1832 included Wesley JENKINS, his wife, the former Margaret UNDERWOOD, and his brother-in-law Thomas UNDERWOOD. Also accompanying them were Jefferson RAGSDALE and presumably his wife.
*Wesley JENKINS married Margaret UNDERWOOD on 27 Dec 1821 in Orange County, Indiana.
*Jefferson RAGSDALE married Harriett DAVID on 06 Feb 1831 in Fountain County, Indiana.
*Thomas UNDERWOOD married Hester Ann WALDRIP on 8 June 1837 in Fountain County, Indiana.
Thomas and Hester's children were Sarah Jane, James H., Rachel M., Stephen Alexander, Thomas, Johanna/"Jossie", Elizabeth/"Lizzie", and Tealie.
I would very much appreciate any information you can offer.
