Look for Alexander Reed/Reid's will in Rockbridge County, VA probated 28 June 1816. It lists Rebecca Kiger as heir. There is a marriage record in Frederick County, VA for a George W Kiger & Rebecca Reid. The date is 3 Jan 1809. Haven't been able to verify if this is our George. Any information on George Kiger/Kyger of Fountain County appreciated. You might also want to check for a Civil War service record for James.

Sharon,
I think we may have connected before. The French line is one of mine, also. I am descended from John Luther's sister, Elizabeth French Spinning. I have limited information on this line and haven't found anything beyond Elizabeth and John's father Benjamin who supposedly married Deborah ???.
Odd isn't it, that a brick wall on my Dad's side is the "French" line and on my mother's side is the "England" line (from KY and southern IN)? :-)

The 1881 Fountain County History on page 430 has an article on John Kiger, son of George and Rebecca (Reid) Kiger. It lists George Kiger as born in Pennsylvania and moving to Rockbridge Co VA, then in 1827 to Parke Co IN.
The Fountain Co. In court records in book 2 page 302 (1837) tell of estate of George Kiger with John Kiger as one of the adm. and James Kiger as an adult heir. The records in book 3 page 136 (1841) on same estate list James Kiger and Susannah Kiger as heirs acknowledging service. George Kiger had owned land in both Parke and Fountain Co. IN.

thank you, janet. phil is there everyday and i get there sometimes 3, sometimes 6 days a week. i just completed documenting all standing stones a couple of days ago. phil is now setting stones. i am at a standstill until phil gets the tractor in to haul all that pile of landscaping rock. so i can now help him set stones. phil and i both agree that we can hardly wait till the following day so we can get back up there. yesterday, i put a decorated big box at the grocery store with the sign on it asking for used and new artificial flowers. it will be interesting to see what response we get. the community is behind us 100%. the man who mows? he don't like us too much. we are causing him more work by setting up the stones that had been stacked by the fence. hmmmmm.......

Sharon,
We just got home from vacation in Indiana where I had the chance to meet Phil. I happened to be driving by the cemetery, saw him at work, and had to stop to thank him for the wonderful work he and others are doing for those who rest in Oak Grove. When we were there in 1999 (we live in California), my heart just broke when I saw all the stones piled in the corner of the cemetery. I took a couple of pictures of them because it made such an impression on me. Well, the cemetery looks worlds different now!
Phil is such a cheerful, enthusiastic worker who is truly engaged in a labor of love. He said that he still has the enthusiasm for the project that he had when he started, and it shows. We all owe Phil and the others working to restore this beautiful cemetery a debt of gratitude.

Judith,
According to the History of Fountain County, page 291, Veedersburg ". . . was laid out in 1871 by P. S. Veeder, Christopher Keeling, and W. L. D. Cochran." You might want to check the town of Chambersburg. It had pretty well died off by the time Veedersburg was founded, but I have read some sources that equate the two.
Good luck!
Janet

this is the 1880 census. i looked in cemetery records and i did find a francis miller who is buried in the old town cemetery in veedersburg. according to the census, your francis was born in 1843. this francis in the cemetery was born april 22,1843 and died aug. 14,1893. also says that a bob, who was son of francis and lee(?) is also buried there. in the census, it does give a son of robert. also the email address of the fountain county genealogy society is focogensoc(a)netscape.net that center is located in veedersburg and has lots of info on the families and history.

i did find susannah kiger buried in mill creek township in harveysburg cemetery. she died sept.10,1852. it says in the cemetery records that there is a long empty space by her stone. since james kiger doesn't show up in those cemetery records, there is a good possibility that he is buried there, but the stone is missing. i haven't found the bennetts yet, but i am looking. also focogensoc(a)netscape.net is the email address for the fountain county genealogy society. good folks there that have lots of info.

I am looking for the name of woman listed on the 1830 Census as 80-90 years because I think this may be the mother of William or the mother of his wife, Nancy. She died before 1840 Census as did William. Looking for the date of William Hanly's death (sometime between 1830-1840 Census).
His wife, Nancy (b. 1783) is listed on the 1840 Census in Shawnee Twp. with a family of 5. William's entry in 1830 has a family of 12 members. I think that William came to Indiana in 1829. Looking for Nancy and William's parents names. They married in VA. Some of the children I know are Cambell Hanley (Handy in the marriage index) m. Eliza Jane Lockhart in 1839 and I believe that maybe Campbell died in the early 1840's. Nancy Hanly married Nathaniel Martin in 1834. James W. Hanley married Mary A. Jenkins in 1848. Margaret M. Hanley married Joseph Crane probably as his second wife sometime after 1850. Martha J. Hanley is on the 1860 Census as not married and living with her sister and the Crane family. I believe there was another daughter which might have been Rebecca.
James William Handley b. 1826 in VA and Mary A. (Jenkins) Handley are found in Warren Co. Mound Twp. in 1860 and then in Vermilion Co. IL in 1870 and 1880. I am looking for them after 1880 as none of the family are listed in 1900.
Mainly I am interested in the name of the 80-90 female that William has in his household in 1830 and when he died so that I may obtain a copy of his will.
Thank you for any help.
