While looking at at photo of the front of the tombstone at
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/in/county/floyd/images/fairview/hainsjasbfron...
This is a big zinc monument that reads:
James B. Hains, Born May 3. 1856. Went home March 24, 1877.
[This James B. Hains died here during his final year at Harvard, according to his
obituary. He would have been 20 years old.]
The opposite side of the monument has a anchor and chain on it, as well as HAINS inscribed
in capital letters.
Why is the year 1879 inscribed in big numbers, under the nameplate of James B. Hains?
There are no other names on the stone.
There is also a small zinc stone with James B. Haines inscribed on it. This small stone is
next to that of Benj. Hains who died as a child after 1900. According to the census
records, the only children of James M. and Mary Hains were James Brooks Hains and Benjamin
and Daniel.
