Hi, I remember this flood somewhat. I was only 6 years old. My folks had a small hotel
in Corydon, Ind. We were flooded up to the front yard but the building was safe. Flood
waters in the street and sidewalk were safe to walk through. The Red Cross brought some
families from New Albany to stay at the hotel. Although there were enough people to fill
the 23 room hotel, there was only one pregnant lady with small children who volunteered to
help my mother clean rooms and feed the other people. There were no other offers to help.
My mother had some old children's clothes and gave them to this lady. Some of the
other guest must have told the Red Cross worker, who confronted mother, saying "you
cannot give those clothes to that lady, you must give them to me to distribute as I see
fit." Well, mother was never know to be shy about defending herself, told the Red
Cross worker where she could go, that she (Mother) would give anything to anyone and that
she (Red Cross
worker) had no right to tell her what to do with her own personal property. I have
heard Mother tell this story many times.
Hope you find this little story amusing. Earl Meech
