Halstead, Henry-Jeffersonville Evening News 19 Nov 1898 p1 c7
Another Row Over a Corpse by Undertakers Shrader
The Jeffersonville matrimonial steerer is not a circumstance to the
undertaker runners at New Albany. On Thursday night Henry Halstead, a
respected citizen of Galena, Floyd county, died and was laid out by his
relatives. Mr. Halstead had been expecting death for some time and a few
days ago he sent word to George Shrader, a New Albany undertaker, to have
his coffin, six feet six long and wide in proportion, ready for him.
Friday morning a relative was dispatched to New Albany but by mistake gave
the order for the casket to John Shrader, a brother of George who sent a
coffin post haste to Galena. At daylight George Shrader heard of the death
and began preparations to follow out Mr. Halstead's instructions. About
the time he got ready to start John's wagon was also moving towards
Galena. A race for the corpse followed by George was outdistanced and when
he arrived he found John had placed the body in a box and was making
hurried preparations to bury it. A quarrel ensued and t!
he corpse was nearly overturned several times. Finally George proved a
priority of claim and the body was placed in his casket. This is the
second tilt of the kind the two have had in the last few months and it is
said both have regular runners employed.
