BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION ENDORSES SOUTHERN INDIANA GENEALOGY PROJECTNEW
ALBANY, IN - A Southern Indiana Genealogical Society program to identify
early pioneers of Clark, Floyd, and Harrison Counties, recognize their
direct living descendants, and preserve those families' histories has been
endorsed by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission and is meant to create an
enduring legacy in honor of the state’s 200th birthday. With the
Commission's endorsement, First Families of Floyd, Clark, and Harrison
Counties is a Bicentennial Legacy Project. The Commission deems the
First Families Project celebratory, creating a lasting legacy, culturally
inclusive, and engaging and inspiring to youth and young adults. To be
considered for the Commission’s endorsement, a project must be open and
accessible to the public, relevant to Indiana and the state’s Bicentennial,
fundable without Commission support, and achievable as a significant
contribution to Hoosier legacy. Donna Foster, president of the Southern
Indiana Genealogical Society, stated, “We are honored to join the
Bicentennial Commission in celebrating Indiana’s history. Participation in
the First Families Legacy Project is a unique way for individuals and
families to contribute to the Bicentennial through their genealogy. SIGS
welcomes anyone verifying direct descent from a settler who lived in Floyd,
Clark, or Harrison County prior to 1841 to join First Families.”
Approved project applicants will receive First Families certificates and be
honored guests at the annual History and Heritage Celebration on October 1.
