The Yerks/Yerkes children were listed in the index of the Indiana Soldier's
and Sailor's Children's Home.
Florence Lilly and Daisy Orena were listed with the dates of 1888 and 1892,
while William Thomas was not.
I would like to know what happened to William Thomas.
[In the 1860 Census of St. Joseph Twp., Allen Co., IN, pg 412 PO Fort Morgan
[?] is Wiliam Yerks, 26, born Canada, wife Sarah, children Minerva,
Christina, Catharine ages 3, 2, 1, wife and children born in Indiana. This
family also appears in the 1870 census of St. Joseph Twp., so this is not
Wm. Thomas]
There is a stone in Galena Cemetery that reads
Andrew Yerks, Co. C., 23d Indiana Infantry [no date]. Was he the brother of
these Yerks children? The 1860 Census lists Andrew Yerks, 27, a broom maker,
b Upp. Canada and Rebecca, 16, b Indiana.
There is a Clarence Yerks [is her a brother?] listed in the death records: H
1-125: Clarence Yerks, male, born Indiana, single, d 19 Aug 1888, Floyd
County; age 20 yr; typhoid fever; father Andrew Yerks, mother Rebecca
Frederick; [no other information listed] -- His obit: Public Press 29 Aug
1888 p3 c2: Clarence Yerks, an exemplary young man, died a few days ago at
his home in Greenville township of typhoid fever, after an illness of some
weeks. [this is when children first admitted to the home]
There are about 5 unmarked and unknown burials next to that of Andrew
Yearks
YERKES WILLIAM THOMAS FLOYD 1888

YERKES DAISY ORENA FLOYD 1888, 1892
YERKS FLORENCE LILLY FLOYD 1888

Were Florence Lilly and Daisy Orena removed from the home and then returned?
If so, who cared for them?
I would appreciate any information on this family.
