Ellettsville (IN) Monroe County Citizen, March 19, 1892, p. 4.
Kate Smith boarded the train Thursday night at Louisville and while en route
for New Albany asked the conductor to hand her a glass of water. She
expressed the desire to retain the glass for the purpose of wetting her
handkerchief, claiming she had the headache, and a moment later she was
observed to empty a white powder into the water and drink the mixture. A
few minutes later she was writing in horrible agony on the floor of the
coach, and it required two men to restrain her. When New Albany was
reached, she was frothing at the mouth, and physicians pronounced it a case
of strychnine poisoning. She died at 8:15 AM and was conscious to the last.
Miss Smith at one time was considered the handsomest women in New Albany.
Two years ago she eloped with a Cincinnati traveling salesman who deserted
her in two weeks.
