NEW ALBANY, IND.
[Special Dispatch to the Enquirer]
New Albany, Ind., Aug. 22, 1870-MURDER OF A STEAMBOATMAN-On Monday last, J.
D. Thompson, late engineer of the Arlington, who had been boarding at
Matthew Dowerman's residence at Lower Albany, mysteriously disappeared.
Thursday the body of a man, supposed to be the engineer of the Boaz
(difficult to read), but which proved to be Thompson, was found in the river
below this city on the Kentucky side and was buried. Yesterday the remains
were disinterred at Louisville, put in a metallic case, brought to this
city, and placed in a vault. They will be sent to Pittsburg in a few days
where his family resides. Upon examination, it was found that the back of
his head was caved in, and his pockets turned wrong side out and his money
and watch gone. When, where, or how Thompson met his fate is unknown. It
is supposed he was killed for his money and thrown into the river.
