Message Board Post:
It's funny that I was getting ready to post this message when I read Sue's last
message about using the New Albany library's newspaper index. I can attest to the
usefulness of that tool. And, the library staff is wonderful at making the occasional
copy of something from microfilm (at a small fee, of course). Sadly, the newspaper index
has not helped me solve my dilemma.
OK, here is my puzzle. My great-grandmother, Margaret Thornton, was born in Cumberland,
England and married John Hindmarch prob. in 1842. She immigrated to the U.S. after 1851
(since she is in the 1851 England census) and before 1860 when she appears in the Union
Co., Kentucky census. At some point, she moved to either Louisville or New Albany and
apparently married John Webb. John Webb was also b. in England, and was first married to
Alice Ogden, second married to Sarah Weaver.
I have not been able to find a marriage date for John Webb & Margaret Thornton
Hindmarch. And, I have not been able to find a death date for Margaret, using any of her
surnames!
I'm basing the Webb-Hindmarch marriage on circumstantial evidence. After
Margaret's son by her first marriage (Matthew Hindmarch)died, an article appeared in
the newspaper that said Matthew was the step-son of Constable John Webb. Additionally,
John Webb is living with one of Margaret's daughters according to the 1900 and 1910
census records. In the 1900 census, he is recorded as a border; in the 1910 census, he is
listed as father-in-law.
At this point, I have narrowed Margaret's death down to between 1880-1908. Based on
the 1900 and 1910 census records, I'm guessing that John Webb and Margaret married in
the early 1900s.
If anyone can provide any information about the connection between John Webb and Margaret
Thornton Hindmarch, I would be most grateful. And, if anyone can help me determine
Margaret's death date, I would be ecstatic!
