There were some graves located in what is now Colston Park in Jeffersonville, IN. These
included Union and Confederate soldiers. Research and an archaeological dig were done as
part of prepartions for a new bridge project. No graves shafts were found and a
government record was located indicating that the graves were moved in 1868 to the New
Albany National Cemetery. However, New Albany National Cemetery was used for original
burials during the war. Both Jeffersonville and New Albany had large hospital populations
during the war. My g-g-grandfather, 3rd Indiana Cavalry, is also buried in New Albany
National Cemetery. Nice to know he has good company.
I believe that during 1868 a number of cemeteries were consolidated into larger national
cemeteries as I know of at least one other instance this occurred in Kentucky. I was
researching a Sellersburg, IN soldier killed at Perryville, KY. He was originally buried
on the battlefield, the shortly moved to the Boyle Co., KY national cemetery. That
cemetery was closed in 1868 and all bodies exhumed and moved to the Camp Nelson National
Cemetery near Lexington, KY.
