Hi, contact the library and ask specifically for the Poor Farm books that are in storage
in the back. I live near Columbus, OH, which is about 4 hrs from New Albany, IN. I was at
the New Albany/Floyd County library a couple of weeks ago, and was directed to two
transcribed books on their public room shelves. Unfortunately, the dates I needed to see
weren't represented in those books. I asked the librarian where the later date
information would be -- according to a little note card in the Poor Farm manila folder of
newspaper clippings, additional records were located at the Floyd County Commissioners
office. Since it was the weekend, I could do no more -- I drove home, then emailed the CC
office the following Monday. They responded that they'd given all the records they had
to the library. I emailed the library -- they told me that I had seen everything they had
when I saw the two transcribed books. I reiterated that the CC office said they had given
everything to the library!
-- meaning the additional records should be at the library also. Well, then someone in
the library's genealogy section recalled the old books in the back room. So I made the
8-hour trip again. By doing so, I was able to find my great-great grandmother's death
information (she was buried on the Poor Farm, although we can't be sure it was in
Potter's Field). Anyway, contact the library ... you may need to make a return trip,
as it's not available on digital ... unless ... I did scan a number of pages from the
late 1870s through the 1890s ... I can email them to you, or tell me a name and I'll
look to see if it's on any of the pages that I scanned. My email is
jennifer.a.jenkins(a)live.com. Good luck!
