I am curious to see if anyone has come across the information I recently had
concerning Stiller family ancestors from Germany to Floyd County. According
to St. Mary's of the Knobs records from Father Neyron at the time
(mid-1800's), the matching surname is actually spelled Stuhler in the
family's native German (Bavarian, per later census records) tongue. Lorenz
Stuhler and his family came to America through the port in Baltimore in
September 1839. Early land purchases in Floyd County made in the 1840's are
to Lorenz in and around where Stiller Road later was laid out north of the
then Paoli-New Albany turnpike. Lorenz passed away in 1850, but his
descendants inherited the farmland he had purchased. Sometime around or
after the Civil War, the family stopped using the German spelling of the
name and had shifted over in both church documents and government documents
to the name we recognize today, Stiller. Still wondering where exactly in
Bavaria the family came from, but I'll save that nugget to discover for
another day.
