1860 12 24 NADL Mon., 24 Dec 1860 p3 c1: The Soldier's Monument. The monument erected
over the remiins of the soldiers who fell on the battle field of Buena Vista, in the
Mexican war, has been repaired and beautifully painted and ormenated. About two yars ago a
number of our citizens determined take such steps as to make the monument a credit to the
city, and conclulded to give a series of picnics each year until enough money could be
collected to pay the expenses of ornamenting it as was the design when it was erected.
Their efforts proved to be successful, and the results of their undertaking are highly
creditable. The sum of aobut $600 was collected in the manner spoken of, and a committee
was appointed to have the monument enclosed by an iron fence. The work has just been
completed by Mr. T. F. Baker of Cincinnat. The style of the fence is rustic, representing
rough hickory posts, with pendant grape vines. It is thirty-six feet square, having a
heavy stone base. The sto!
ne work was done by Freaderer & Bence, and the painting by Thomas R. Kunkle of this
city. There is to be four stacks are of muskets and four pyramids of cannon balls placed
around the monument. The enclosure is to be sodded with blue grass, and shell walks laid
in the spring. The cost of the fence alone will be something near $500, and the
ornamenting about $100 more. The monument cost originally $750, making the cost of the
whole between $1,300 and $1,400. The committee having the matter in charge have performed
their duties diligently, and deserve much praise for their labors. The monument is the
most prominent andamong the most beautiful structures in the cemetery, and is something to
which every citizen can refer to with pride and satisfaction.;
