Hi Floyd Co listers,
Looking through some of the old clippings my grandmother, Daisy HEYD
(McQUAID) had saved, I found this one from a column titled "Fifty Years Ago"
by Alice ? in the New Albany Tribun.... (?) from 1934?
For your enjoyment/edification, here is the item entitled:
"FEBRUARY, 1884:
The flood of 1884 is the champion, all former flood records having been
wiped out. The mighty torrent is still swelling. When its upward course will
cease no one can say. Great suffering and destruction is being wrought
everywhere. The riVer bottom farms are desolated; barns, outhouses, fences,
haystacks are floating off. Residences along the river are being wrecked.
Machinery and stock in the foundries and factories are badly damaged; in
fact, all the accumulations of the industry of the people are being washed
away. There is much suffering, but New Albany is helping herself the best she
can. The flood is catching many people who did not expect to be caught.
The back-water is rising in the gutter on Spring street, westward from
West Second street. The street railway transfers passengers from Spring to
Main street by wagon, the track on West Eighth street being mostly under
water. Several houses in Falling Run bottoms, having been weighted down, are
now out of sight, chimneys and all. The river at Evansville is said to be
thirty miles wide. There is but little dry land left in Jeffersonville.
Mauckport, Harrison County, is reported swept away, and most of Leavenworth
is under water."
Daisy HEYD was born 2 months after the flood, 19 April 1884, in New
Albany IN. She was the daughter of Jacob HEYD, Jr. (1859, N.A. IN-1918 PA)
and Phebe RICHMOND (1860, PA1906, PA). They were married on 21 Dec 1881, by
the Rev. J. S. WOODS (minister of Wesley Chapel) at the home of the bride's
mother on East Oak Street between 13th and 15th.
Jacob was the son of Jacob HEYD, Sr. (1824, Alsace, FRA1880, N.A. IN)
and Caroline MILLER/MUELLER (1832, NY1861, N.A. IN). They were married by
T.L. Lichtr?stein? on15 Sep 1851 in New Albany IN.
Caroline was the daughter of Friedrich/Frederick MUELLER/MILLER (1801,
Elsass, FRA1849, N.A. IN) and Maria Catharina WILD (1802? GER/FRA?1866?,
N.A. IN)
I'd be happy to hear from anyone with further information about HEYDs,
MILLER/MUELLERs, or WILDs from New Albany.
Collateral names to these include: CHAMBERLAIN, SCHARF, VENABLE, VAN
KIRK, PENNINGTON, DENNY, KOHLER, BLOOR, THOMAS.
Hope you enjoyed reading about the great flood of 1884.
