We've pretty much struck out in our seach for census records on:
John and/or Maria CHRISTOPHER
As you already know, I've been working with students from the 3rd and 4th
grades of S. Ellen Jones Elementary School at the "Old Colored Peoples
Cemetery" (renamed "Freedomland Cemetery" by the students). We found a
completely buried headstone in wonderful condition that bears the following
inscription:
Maria
Wife of John Christopher
A resident of
Little Rock, Ark.
Died Jan. 31, 1861
Aged 28 years
The presumption is that Maria was African-American, which is going to make
information on her as scarce as "hen's teeth".
Is there anyone on the list who can go to the New Albany-Floyd Co. Library to
search for a death notice or obituary on Maria from January 31, 1861?
We're presuming she was a free woman. We also believe she or her husband were
people of some means, giving the beautiful and elaborate stone erected at her
grave. (98% of the other 300+ graves in Freedomland Cemetery are marked only
with field stones.) You can see photographs of the stone being excavated on
our draft page at:

Thank you.
