Surname: Mangin, Turk, Losson, Vourms, Fougerousse

Is it possible the postcard you have says "Lubeln" instead of
"Lublin"?
Im researching my mothers family, the Mangins of Daviess Co. Indiana
and have come to suspect recently that they may have roots in Longeville
les St. Avold, Moselle, Alsace-Lorraine, France. According to The Atlantic
Bridge to Germany, Volume IV, the German name for Longeville is Lubeln,
Elsass-Lothringen.
My 2GGf Peter (Pierre) Mangin and his family arrived in Daviess Co. Indiana
in 1867. He traveled from Havre to New York on the ship Bellona, arriving
November 11 1867: Mangin Pierre, 50, male, occupation unknown, province
France, village unknown, destination USA; Marguerite, 50; Francois, 22;
Nicolas, 15, Anna, 13; Pierre 11; Felix, 9; Therese, 8; Marie, 7; Marguerite,
5; Nicholas, 2; Susanne, 9 mos. Believe this is the last of several trans-Atlantic
crossings for this Mangin family, and that they were probably in New Orleans,
LA as early as 1849/1850 with most of the older children having been born
there.
Traveling with Peter & family on the Bellona were the Jean Pierre Turk
family: Turck J. Pierre, 34, Male, occupation unknown, Province France,
village unknown; Marguerite, 26, Female; Joseph, 7, male; Pierre, 5, male;
Louise, 3 male, Marguerite, 10 mos., female, infant.
Two of the younger group of Mangins on the Bellona are probably not children
of Pierre and Marguerite. Its unknown what happened to Nicolas age 15,
however Francois (Frank) is shown in the 1870 Daviess Co. census living
with the Turk family. Because of that, I had speculated that Frank and
Marguerite Turk were siblings. Although she is shown as Marguerite in the
aforementioned records, she is called Anna Mangin in most Catholic records
at St. Simon and St. Marys Catholic Churches in Washington, Daviess Co.
IN, so I imagine her name was Anna Marguerite.
In the 1870 and 1880 censuses, the Mangins and Turks owned adjoining farms
in Steele Twp., Daviess County. An 1888 atlas of Washington Twp., Daviess
Co. shows Peter Mangin with a half plot next to John P. Turk, and Marguerite
Mangin owning half of a half plot adjoining Peters. Doubt if the farms
moved, so maybe there was a redrawing of township lines. Anyway, suspect
the Peter shown here is my GGf, Pierres son, who had married Henriette
Klingel in 1880, and that Marguerite is old Pierres widow.
The following excerpt from a bio for Frank Mangin states he was in New
Albany, Floyd County, Indiana circa 1879:
From The History of Daviess County by Alva Otis Fulkerson, Bowen,
1915:
Frank Mangin was born September 24, 1845, in Lorraine, France, and is
the son of Frank and Katrina (Lawson) Mangin, both natives of France, where
they lived and died. The subject of this review received his education
in his native country and came to his country in 1867, first settling in
Floyd County, Indiana, where he remained until 1870, and then came to Washington,
Indiana. In 1878, he returned to France and was married there to Catherine
Vourms, born on September 12, 1833, and a native of Lorraine, France. Returning
with his wife to America in 1879, he went to the town of New Albany, Indiana
for a short time, then coming to Daviess County, entered, and at a later
date bought his present farm consisting of forty acres.
I dont have a death certificate for Pierre or Marguerite Mangin yet, but
I do have one for Frank and it states his parents were Frances Mangin born
Lorraine, France and Catherine Losson born Lorraine, France.
In addition, there was a John Mangin (b 7/17/1843 in France) in Daviess
Co. (wife Ottile Eschlimann). I believe John arrived in Daviess Co. in
the late 1880s my first record of him is the baptism of one of his children
at St. Marys Catholic Church in 1888 (baptismal sponsors were John Peter
& Marguerite Turk). Johns Death Certificate dated 10/19/1921 states his
parents were Frank Mangin born in France and Mary Fougerousse born in France.
Do you recognize any of these people or know anything about the Mangin
family of Lorraine, France?
