Thanks for the information. I have a copy of the 1850 census - not a transcript - and
Mary Ellen E Allen's birthplace is spelled out - Iowa - not abbreviated Ia. The
Benjamin Allen you cite in the 1870 census is not my Benjamin, although he had me confused
for a while too. Below is a short summary of my tracing of my Benjamin. I am sure it is
the same man in each instance, although the "facts" certainly vary. His
daughter Rhuhama is my great grandmother. I suspect my Benjamin is the son of James T.
Allen, as he is listed right after him in the 1850 census, but I really need some stronger
proof. Is Benjamin Franklin Allen, along with either or both wifes - Cinderella, Mahala -
buried in Fairview cemetery?
1870 census says he was born in KY. Daughter Elton's death certificate says he was
born in IN. Daughter Rhuhama's death certificate says he was born in New Orleans, LA.
Hester Allen, in 1880 census, says her father was born in LA. 1850, 1860 and 1880
censuses, Floyd Co., IN, say he was born in New York.
Probable reconstruction from censuses -- Benjamin (a farmer), Cinderella, and family in
New Albany, IN in 1860 census. In 1870 census, Benjamin (a farmer), Cinderella (called
Mary - could this be Mahala already?) and family now in Charleston, Coles Co., IL. In
1880 census, Benjamin (now a carpenter), and wife Mahala in New Albany, Floyd Co., IN. In
1880 census there is an twelve year gap between sons Elmore and Ralph. Apparently
Cinderella died ca 1875 in either IL or IN and Benjamin remarried to Mahala ca 1875
probably in IN. Benjamin's daughter Rhuhama married in New Albany in January, 1875,
so he was probably back there by that time.
