The Southern Indiana Genealogical Society has a new publication that may be
of interest to African-Americans
The book is called
"West Haven, an African American Cemetery in New Albany, Floyd County,
Indiana"
This cemetery was sometimes recorded in Death Records as Rest Haven, West
Street, West Union and Colored Cemetery. I saw one reference to it as "Apple
Tree Garden." It is located on West Street in New Albany.
Includes records transcribed from information found in the cemetery plus
some other information such as obituaries. There were not records for
everyone buried in West Haven, but over 1600 have been recorded. There is
also a list of deeds that was found at this cemetery. This cemetery
information has not been available before.
Some of the surnames are: Abell/Able, Alexander, Baker, Barber/Barbour,
Brown, Buchanan/Buchanon, Carter, Carter, Clay, Finley, Franklin, Gohagan,
Grant, Grundy, Henderson, Jackson, Johnson, Jones, Kinslow, Lewis,
Manual/Manuel, McPheetersMiles, Miller, Mitchell, Richardson, Roberts,
Robertson, Robinson, Russell, Sanders, Saunders, Shirley, Smith, Walker,
Wilkerson, Williams, woods, Yates but there are many, many more. The book
has an every-name index. The majority of the persons seem to have come by
way of Kentucky. This is the largest African-Cemetery in New Albany.
