Hello the list,
We are currently trying to put together a chronological history of the Floyd County
Infirmary on Grant Line Road in New Albany, Indiana. The site is also known as the
"County Asylum" and or the "County Poor Farm". Of specific interest
are any previous research papers, articles or books with historical documentation. All
bibliographic references will be greatly appreciated.
Our research will also attempt to identify any areas, in proximity to the current building
location, that may have been used as a cemetery during the period when the property was
used as a County Infirmary.
There are at least (2) known cemeteries within the Floyd County Park (current owner of the
County Infirmary property). One of these is delineated by a split rail fence and has an
historical marker identifying it as the "Potter's Field" There are just a
few graves with monuments here, but many more slumped depressions in this area indicate
unmarked graves. The other is ostensibly what remains of a small family plot; only one
base stone barely visible at the surface. Both of these are some distance from the
standing building.
There is at least some anecdotal information suggesting that additional burials may have
taken place north and west of the Infirmary structure. However, the only burial place
indicated on 20th century maps is the one I've described above, and so far we have
been unable to locate any plat or map of the property indicating where additional burials
may have taken place. Initial inquiries indicate that at least (155) inmates were buried
on the County Infirmary premises. Others listed in the death records are shown as having
been buried elsewhere.
Thanks in advance for any information provided and for pointing us to any historical
reference material. If anyone would like to discuss this in more detail, please contact
me directly using my personal e-mail address: rgreen(a)insightbb.com. Please feel free to
send your phone number and a time when it is convenient to contact you and I will do so at
my expense.
Best Regards,
