Don,
I read both of your replies, and you actually have answered all my questions thoroughly.
Since you are not related, I am extremely grateful for your help.
It was just an hour after I posted this query that I found the 1870 household of
"Harry Baxter" (instead of the correct name Henry) and wife Sarah F. with son
John D. C. Baxter, age 4. That would be John Don Carlos Baxter. From the 1870 census of
Ward 6, New Albany, Floyd Co., IN, page 431A, HH #418/422.
I'm not offended about Florence and the child Bertha. Whatever she did. If John Don
Carlos was still living, then Florence was the only reasonable parent of Bertha. Florence
died May 14, 1905, and any child she may have had would be without parent in 1910. It all
fits.
It's very disturbing that my census indexes for San Joaquin Co., CA were so bad that
they did not show the family even once. I can't thank you enough for the precise
citation of the census pages. I can actually find the pages now without the index.
Thanks very much.
David Johnson
