My great-great-aunt Catherine "Kate" Bauer was married (1) Sarles (probably
Thomas Jefferson Sarles, Sr.) and (2) John Hall (b.Feb 1845?). Catherine was b.1852 (Mar
?) in Alsace and d.1925 (24 May ?).
Her tombstone only gives the years 1852 - 1925. Catherine's parents were Friederich
Wilhelm Bauer, Sr. and Katharina (nee Letterman) Bauer.
Friederich was b. 27 Aug 1810 in Dimirinceh, Germany and d. 22 Jun 1868 in New Albany, IN.
Katharina was b. 03 Apr 1811 in Dososenheim, Alsace and d. 27 Mar 1872 in New Albany.
Friederich and Katharina, along with daughter Catherine (Katarine) and son Friederich, Jr.
immigrated to New Albany about 1854. Friederich, Jr. (Fred) later moved to Webster Twp.,
Harrison County, IN and married Maria Arndt (my great-grandparents).
Friederich Bauer, Sr., Katharina Bauer, and Catherine Sarles Hall are buried in Scott
Cemetery, New Albany.
On the 1880 census of New Albany, Catherine Sarles age 28 is listed as a widow, with 6 of
her children living with her (Emma C., Anna, Louis, Louisa, Thomas J. and infant who was
Catherine "Katie" . She married John Hall about 1884. The 1900 census of New
Albany shows John and Catherine with 8 children (Harry, Adam, Laura, William, Lawrence,
Leona, Charles, and George). Catherine was widowed before the 1910 census where she is
shown living in New Albany with 6 of her children. During the 1920 census, she was living
in Louisville with daughter Leona. Her son Adam J. was living with Annie and Martin
Horton in the same building. Annie was probably Catherine's daughter Annie Sarles.
I have a snapshot identified as "great-aunt Kate Hall and Melvin Smith", and
two studio photos identified as "cousin Katie Sarles" and "cousin Louis
Sarles".
If you connect I would appreciate hearing from you.
