Sue,
Thank you. I have seen that article and pondered over it for hours, but there is no
way, at the moment, that I can make any connection. My ancestor, William Henry Dodge, was
the son of Isreal Dodge. His father died when he was three and his mother immediately put
him to live with her brother a "poor but very kind shoemaker", in or near New
Albany. As we do not have the mother`s name, we do not have the brother`s name. It is only
a guess that the marriage of an Isreal Dodge and Susan Conrad in Crawford County, Indiana
in 1827 is our Isreal. There were many of the same name at the time. It is only a guess
following that guess that the Isreal Conrad listed in the same marriage record, was
Susan`s brother and was the shoemaker. I have tried to find any reference to the Andrew
Isreal you mention having an orphan/nephew living with him, but cannot. I fear that he is
the only shoemaker documented and that many just were not important enough to be noticed
by the recordkeepers.
But..........if anyone comes across William Henry Dodge or Isreal Dodge or what looks
like a family member from 1810-1840, please do write!
Anne
