Looking for information on the family of John S. Doughten who appears on the 1850 census
in Floyd Co, IN. He is 62 years old and b. New Jersey. He has in his household Claudius,
age 19, George M., age 16, Claurena M. age 11, Adele J., age 8, all b. IN and Martha
Hollingshaw, b. NY. He is also on the 1840 census. In particular, I'm looking for the
name of the wife or wives he had. One of his wives is probably the mother of Alexis Leroy
Armstrong, who appears on the 1850 census in Davidson Co, TN, married to Mary Jane Riley.
A man named Armstrong was supposedly first rector of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church
in Wheeling, WV. His son was also supposedly a rector at a later time. One of these was
possibly named John Armstrong. I am interested in this Armstrong family, particularly if
either of these men were married and the names of their spouses. I am also interested in
how these two Armstrong gentlemen are related to John Armstrong who was a physician in
Jackson Co, WV. Dr. John Armstrong's will mentions sons Alexis Leroy Armstrong and
William C. Armstrong, as well as his wife, K.S.D. Armstrong (probably Katherine Divine).
Dr. John Armstrong was married at least once before to Mazella Cozart b. PA, in 1835. But
Dr. John Armstrong would also have had to be married at least one more time to a woman
born in France and possibly another time to a woman born in Virginia or England, according
to information provided to census takers (see below).
William C. Armstrong (b. VA about 1821) became a minister in Wisconsin. In 1880, he is age
59 in Waupaca, WI, and says he's b. VA, his father England and his mother, b.
Virginia. His wife is Hattie, age 44, b. Vermont and daughter Mary S., age 31, b. IN.
William C. Armstrong, age 49, appears on the 1870 census in Walworth, WI, with wife
Harriet, age 36 b. Vermont, daughter Leontine, age 11, b. WI and son Claudine, age 8, b.
WI. In 1900, Olandius Armstrong (probably really Claudius) appears in Oconto, WI, b. 1863,
age 37, b. WI, father b. England, mother b. England. He is a physician, with wife, Emma,
b. 1866, WI, and daughter Claudine, b. 1896, WI and son John William, b. 1899, WI.
Claudine m. Herbert Lord, a civil engineer and they're in the 1930 census in Madison,
WI, with son, Richard H. age 5, b. WI.
Leroy Armstrong (b. VA about 1830) married Mary Jane Riley in Nashville, Davidson Co, TN
in 1850. Leroy Armstrong had at least one half-sister, Adele Doughten Tatem (Mrs.
Charles), of Moorestown, Burlington Co, NJ. Mrs. Tatem was b. 1842, IN, and appears in the
household of John S. Doughten, b. 1788 in NJ, in Floyd Co, IN in 1850. There is no mother
in this household, but there are siblings listed as Claudius, George M. and Claurena.
However, her mother, presumably Leroy Armstrong's mother also, was b. in France,
according to information on later census. There is another Adelle Doughten on the 1850
census in Burlington Co, NJ. She was b. 1827 or 1829 in NJ and married Nathan H. Buzby 5
Feb 1852 in Burlington, NJ.
Would appreciate knowing anything about the Armstrong family connected with St.
Matthew's Episcopal Church and other Armstrong families who might be related. I have
information on the descendants of Leroy Armstrong and Mary Jane Riley. Thank you.
