Now, as for moving pages. Say Betty got IN sponsored by another
server, a college maybe. Who is to say, that after things get big,
the server's admin decides they want pay for housing the state page?
This naturally is happening with rootsweb..I have been with RW since
it basically began, and at that time, it was free. You could access
any database they had. Now you gottas sponser to see some of the
databases.
This is, in fact, not true.
RootsWeb does not require anyone to be a Sponsor to access any of
our databases. We actually don't even have the technology in a
general sense to tell whether a Web surfer is a Sponsor or not.
You indicated in another message that we were charging for use of
the RSL; that's specifically not true.
It is true that we require folks to be Sponsors to have a few
resources, like mailinging list ownership, Family Association
boards, and personal Web space. Even in those cases, the cost of
being a Sponsor is a trivial fraction of what it costs RootsWeb to
operate the facility. We're only charging a fraction of the real
cost to make sure that the new listowner / board admin / Webmaster
has at least some personal commitment to the facility they've asked
us to create.
RootsWeb always has been free and always will be free. That's the
*point* of the place. Cheers, B.
