I concur basically with what Gene has said. Rootsweb is a godsend to all
aspects of genealogy. Let's just hope it doesn't get too big for its
britches.
what Lori said, I'm not aware that in order to access some of
their
databases you have to be a contributor. You do have be a contributor to be
In the late 80s, Rootsweb started out with the Roots Surname List. This
was totally free. Then, in the early 90s, they grew so big, that you had
to become a paid member to access some of the databases. This is what I
was referring to.
And I foresee it becoming that way with other sections of rootsweb. I
just want all of us to be prepared for anything that could happen.
And as far as having to filter abuse, yes, we have done that with our
personal lists. But IN hasn't had to filter any CC from mail lists.
I say we let this die down, do our genealogy, and see what happens. But
be prepared to act if needed.
And as for free web space. Go to
http://genweb.net and fill out Randy's
form asking for free web space. He has unlimited space available for
genealogy sites. Any kind, any sort. Gedcoms welcome, ftp is available.
Surname mailling lists are available, etc. Sounds like a very good thing
he is doing.
