John Rigdon posted this to the S.E. Region List this morning and I think it
is a good explanation of what is going on. I like the idea of a domain
name... I think the initial cost is $70 for two years ... If anyone else
knows more about this - please let us know.. but this is a very sensible
letter and not taking no issue with anyone.

I despair that the problem may be beyond fixing now, but I would still like
to
see The USGenWeb Project get back on track.
One of the very real problems that has developed is that the project has
been
so successful and is so dependent on one server site, that Brian has had to
build a monster server site to handle all of the bandwidth. By my estimate
the monthly cost for ongoing operations is $10,000 without any labor
factored
in.
Now we can continue to feed this monster, or we can lay plans to make The
USGenWeb Project a distributed network as it was originally designed to be.
If every county page and state page were spread around on various servers,
the
overall impact (and cost of operations) on the individual servers would be
much less.
Every CC generally has some "free" space available with their own service
provider, and for those who don't we could start a "corporate kitty" or
direct
them to some of the free sites on the web. For my Civil War in GA and SC
sites, I am getting 100 mb of space for $25.00 per month and an entire state
could be hosted in that amount of space.
Let's see - $25 times 50 states comes to $1250 per month. That leaves
another
$9,000 per month that we are now raising for Rootsweb that could be directed
elsewhere - to the benefit of The USGenWeb Project - and the money being
accountable to our own board.
I wholeheartedly support the idea of a state getting its own domain and
would
be happy to join in a discussion of how this might be accomplished.
