This is interesting. Sometimes people don't go just across the border.
My brother and his girlfriend drove all the way from Lafayette to
Cave-In-Rock, Illinois and got married when they were kids. This was in
1964. They found a J.P. that didn't ask any questions about their ages;
they were 16 and 15 at the time. She was going to have to move to
California with her family and so they ran off together. It sure caused
a ruckus! I was 12 at the time and thought it was great. My older
brother had just married in September, and with my other brother now
married, I got to move into their bedroom. It was much better than
mine, which had pink ballerina wallpaper all over the walls.
Believe it or not, they are still married, but unfortunately they never
had any kids. My brother should've had at least a half a dozen just
like him - for payback!

In southwestern Indiana, many have gone across state lines into
Shawneetown, IL to elope for a "quickie marriage." I have not heard
of anyone running across the Ohio River into Kentucky (Henderson or
Owensboro) to elope. I believe that the state laws were similar
enough that there existed no advantage for a "quickie marriage."
