Thanks to Darlene I have learned something I didn't know had changed
(apparently).
In the past I used the obits and then went to the contributor list for email
and snail mail address for these persons doing the newspaper indexing --
they have always been helpful and many times would not only tell me more
info on the obit but would xerox and send this obit to me. I saw that they
had discontinued this email/snail mail address and name of contributors in
the index they send to the persons subscribed to the Obits List.
After Darlene told me that you could not get this info unless you were a
contributor I went to the webpage and found the same thing.
I have since written to find out why this has changed and the subscribers
were not notified of change, etc.
For those who are totally confused about what I am speaking about it is the
obituary list that you can subscribe to (comes to you daily) and is an index
of different obituaries from major newspapers around the world. This is
also online and very very nice way for you to find out persons in your
county who have died (even if they lived in another state), their age,
maiden names, etc.
For instance -- the list gives me the following:
MARTIN, Carmen E; 95; Fontana CA>Birmingham AL; San Bernardino C-S (CA);
1998-6-23; dianet
MARTIN, Edward T; 80; San Cruz CA; West County T; 1998-5-19; latvija
MARTIN, Harriet L Ward Woodward; 88; Altamonte Springs FL; Meadville Trib
(PA); 1998-6-22; pjr
MARTIN, James Arthur; 49; Montgomery AL>El Cerrito CA; West County T;

MARTIN, Ray Wilber; 89; Lebanon MO; Springfield N-L; 1998-6-26; hkohut
MARTIN, Timothy R "Timmy Red"; 37; Youngstown OH; Sharon H (PA); 1998-2-24;

MARTINEZ, Antonio; 0; San Pablo CA; West County T; 1998-6-17; latvija
MARTINEZ, Kirk Anthony; 40; Vacaville CA; West County T; 1998-6-21; latvija
MARTINEZ, Ty; 43; McCloud CA>Eugene OR; Register-Guard; 1998-6-27; carle
MARULLO, Victoria Carolyn (DOWNEY); 46; Camp Roberts CA>Independence MO;
Independence E; 1998-6-11; fdsmith
MASCOLO, Jordan Brian; 0; Hartford CT; Hartford Courant; 1997-1-9; townsend
LUTZ, Mary E (THOMPSON); 73; Evansville IN>Columbia MO; Boonville D-N;

LUTZ, Mary E (THOMPSON); 73; Evansville IN>Columbia MO; Boonville D-N;

LYLES, Grace (JAMES); 65; Utica NY; Utica O-D; 1998-6-23; maryh
MAAHS, Lavertia L (INGLES); 85; Harbor Beach MI>San Pablo CA; West County T;
1998-5-19; latvija
MABLE, Annette B (WRIGHT); 60; New York City NY; Trenton (NJ); 1998-6-25;

MacDONALD, A George; 76; Whittier CA; Los Angeles T; 1998-6-25; janmrw
MACDOUGALL, Archibald F; 90; Erie PA; Erie T-N; 1998-6-23; gypsy50
MACULSAY, David P; 49; San Bernardino CA; San Bernardino C-S; 1998-6-23; dianet
Now if you look above you will see that there was a person who was born in
Evansville, IN and died Columbia MO at age of 73 and the obit was in the
paper June 15, 1998 and her name was Mary E. (Thompson) Lutz and this was in
the Boonville Daily News Newspaper.
If you go to the website address
http://www.rootsweb.com/~obituary
and do a search on Princeton IN (this is in county I work)
I get the following:
DAVIS, Otto; 66; Princeton IN>Tampa FL; Tampa Trib; 1998-1-30; cpig
DAVIS, Otto J; 66; Princeton IN>Tampa FL; Tampa Trib; 1998-1-30; cpig
HIPSHER, Willard L "Will"; 53; Princeton IN>Colorado Springs CO; KI MD Bay
Times (MD); 1996-11-27; jwilly
MAY, Allen Sgt; 67; Princeton IN>Lafayette LA; Daily Advertiser
(LA);1996-3-26; lpknecht
STEPHENS, Edward D "Bubbles"; 62; Princeton IN; Evansville Press; 1996-9-26;
saappler
STORJOHANN, L Richard; 63; Princeton IN>Boonville MO; Boonville D-N;
1998-3-12; fdsmith
STORJOHANN, L Richard; 63; Princeton IN>Boonville MO; Boonville D-N;
1998-3-12; fdsmith
STRAWN, Arthur J; 83; Princeton IN>San Antonio TX; San Angelo S-T;
1998-2-19; dhcalk
Again as you can see here are persons who died in Princeton, IN as well as
ones who died in Boonville, MO and San Antonio, TX -- VERY VERY VALUABLE
INFO to researchers from Gibson Co, IN.
BTW: to search with multiple words you need to use the quote marks around
the string of words -- like this "Princeton IN" and you must be sure that it
is exactly caps, etc. as would be in the obit.
I will find out more -- but even if you cannot get the actual obit you can
go to the library, lds, etc. and order microfilms of these newspapers or see
if someone would look it up for you (I would start by going to that
newspaper town's USGenWeb Project county and put a query there or ask the cc
if they have anyone willing to do newspaper lookups for you (should be easy
since you already know it was in Obituary section plus date of paper).
Still a valuable source even if we can't get the contributor/indexer's name
and address.
Thanks again, Darlene for letting me know of this change -- it had been
awhile since I had requested the obit from a contributor.
