Did you check with Mr. Wagner at the Veterans office in the courthouse annex?
Since my Dad was in the service, I know there are avenues where people can put in requests
specifically addressed to the soldier's outfit. Hopefully, someone (although there
are fewer and fewer as the years go by) might remember what happened. All the military
magazines have lists of these requests. You might check w/Mr. Wagner because I don't
see these magazines anymore now that my Dad is deceased. Probably any retiree could help
you with this.
Maybe the records did burn, but most genealogists I've ever talked to have a healthy
skepticism when they hear this. Do you know specifically who said the records burned?
Go to the website for the military service he was in and try to find a link for personal
affairs or something like that and share your plight. I've never done this kind of
search, but there are a lot of websites on WWII that you might check out.
Good luck,
MaryAlice

Subject: [INDUBOIS] WWII records
Hi-- I was having problems getting this to go through last night and earlier today, now
it seems to be going through. Anyway I was wanting some suggestions as to where I can
go next-- below is my first note (hopefully now it won't appear several times on the
mail list):
Hi, Another person and I are trying to find information on how a relatative died in
WWII-- we know his name, date of death-- Sept 21, 1944, he was in the 26 division, 104
infantry. He is buried at St. Laurent, Colleville, (Normandy) France. He was a first
LT, and one story is that he stepped on a mine while leading his men on a maneuver,
another story is he was playing basketball and hit by lightning. He did leave a very
young son, who married-- and I am trying to help the wife find the correct story. She
said she wrote for records and was told they burned. I do have an obit, but it
doesn't give a story of how he died. What else can be done? Thanks so much.
