Hello Jeanette: I saw your email on my husband's genealogy site and am
responding in reference to your research trip to Dubois County, Indiana.
We live in Dubois County and welcome your visit this September.
We have several nice motels. Quality Inn in Huntingburg, Sleep Inn in Jasper,
Days Inn in Jasper, Jasper Inn in Jasper, Holiday Inn Express in Jasper.
Hopefully you will find one to your liking.
While you are researching, you will want to spend at least one entire day at
the Jasper Library. It has a wonderful genealogy room, a little cramped, but
computers, micro-film machines, and copier are available. (It is usually warm
and stuffy in this room, so dress cool). Contact the library 812-482-2712 to
find out the days and hours that an assistant is in the genealogy room. There
is one man that is helpful, however, somewhat overbearing and intrusive, with
bad breath. You may want to arrange around him.
Another great spot to visit is the Dubois County Museum located in Jasper.
You will need about 4 full hours to fully tour the facility and gift shop. The
museum is very well done!!! No admission, runs on donations only.
If you have any ancestors from the Ireland, Madison Twp, or Boone Twp, areas
make certain to visit their History Museum. It is located in the basement of
the old Shilo Church (in town of Ireland) and is absolutely awesome for such a
tiny little town. They have over 1000 photos and the contact person Delbert
"Junie" Himsel is quite knowledgeable. He has a great dry sense of humor.
Make sure he tells you the story about the person that donated an antique
pump-organ to the church!
If you will be in Dubois County during the weekend of September 17, 18, 19,
please visit Holland. We will be celebrating 151 years with a three day fest.
The following weekend, the town of Huntingburg holds a three day fest.
If you have any further questions that we might answer, please do not hesitate
to ask. We love to talk history and genealogy at our house and welcome you to
stop to visit during your trip. Sincerely, Elizabeth Elshoff and Russ Friedman

I am planning on traveling to Dubois County in September for a
research trip. I will be coming into Louisville and driving to
Dubois County. Can anyone suggest a nice place to stay and possibly
other things I might want to do while I am there? Also, what are
the research facilities I want to be sure to visit?
Thanks for your time,
Jeanette
