Just attended a wonderful conference in Toledo where George Schweitzer
spoke about finding people in indexes. Things to look out for are 1) name
may be anglicized or translated 2) name can be spelled various ways,
depending on who is hearing it and how they understand the accent.
From my notes, Look at sound patterns: letter[sound] Initial
(internal),
var = various, vow = vowel = a,e,i,o u, or double (same & diff)
a[var] A/Ai/Ay/Au/E(vow)
b[b]B/P(b/bb/p/pp)
c[ch]CH(ch/tch/dg)
d[d]D(d/dd/t/tt)
e[var]E/Ea/I/Ei(vow)
f[f]F/Ph/Pf(f/ff/ph/gh/v)
g[g]G/GH/G/gg/gh/k/ck)
h[h]H/omitted(h/omitted)
i[var]I/E/U(vow)
j[j]J/G(g/dg/j/d/dd)
k[k]C/K/CH(k/ck/c/ch/x)
l[l]L(l/ll/ld)
m[m]M(m/mm/mb/mp/n)
n[n]N/Kn(n/nn/ng/nd/nt)
o[var]O/Oa/U(vow)
p[p]P(p/pp/b/pb)
q[kw]Qu/Kw(qu/kw/k)
r[r]R/Rh/Wr(r/rr/w)
s[s]S/C(c/ss/z/st)
[sh]Sh/Sch(sh/ch)
t[t/ch]T/Th(t/tt/th/d)
u[var]U(vow)
v[v]V(v/f)
w[w]W/Wh(w/wh/v/vow) note v & w can be interchanged
x[ks]: see K
y[y]Y/Yh(y,vow)
z[[z]Z(s)
look in the indexes for the first 3 or 4 sounds and its variations
Kenton: C/K/Ch + vow + n/nn/ng/nd/nt
Sisler/S/C/Sh/Sch + vow (ex i, e, u, y, u with umlate) +s/ss/z/st
Using this for Reischman (now say it with a German accent!)
R/Rh/Wr + e, ei, ee, i + sch/sh/ch
and try Richman, which would be a direct translation.

Hi,
I am looking for information on my great grandmother's family, who lived
at
some point in Dubois County, around Ferdinand. Her name was Margaret
Reischman(n), born in Ferdinand on December 20, 1860. I have the 1860 IN
Census on CD rom, but there are no listings for any
Reischman(n)'s. Her
sister, Mary Magdalene (Lena) Reischman, was born in Dubois County on
February 2, 1856, so I am assuming that they did live in the county
during
the 1860's until the family moved (mid 1870's??) to St.
Joseph, TN.
I have found immigration records online for Peter Reischman (their
father, my
gg grandtather), which he filed in Dubois County.
I have absolutely no information on my gg grandmother, Anna Bath
Reischman's
family. I do have birth and death dates for most of the family (from
TN
and
OH), but
no information on their backgrounds except that they were from Bavaria
(not
much help).
Any information is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
