I worked my way back through my husband's Aufderha(a)r ancestors in Dubois
County via the census. If you don't have the 1880 census entry for John
Leonard Eck, that's what I would suggest starting with. That would
provide his parents' names (or getting his death certificate). Then get
the 1870, and so on backwards.
I will tell you about the Aufderha(a)rs because it's very possible these
folks came from the same area at a similar time. The Aufderhaars came to
Dubois County and the U.S. in the 1840s and 1850s. The one I am
interested in traveled up the Mississippi entering the U.S. at New
Orleans. Other Aufderhaars settled in Missouri and Ohio. My Aufderhaars
and a more distant group of Aufderhaars also from Dubois County came from
Ladbergen not far from the Netherlands. It was Prussia at the time.
There is a whole town in Ohio that the residents are all descended from
people who came from Ladbergen. My understanding was that Dubois County
had a similar cluster of Germans from Ladbergen. I would suspect there is
a good chance your Germans came from Ladbergen as well. You'll not be
able to prove it though, unless you work backwards to find the initial
emigrants' names.
I have the Dubois County marriage and will indexes put together by Lillian
Doane but they predate your information. Marriages cover Jan 1873-June
1895 and wills from Nov 1840 to May 7 1924. There are no Dorsam entries.
This information may be useful to you once you know more:
Wills:
Book 6 (March, 1913-May 7, 1924) page 280 Eck, George
Book 6 (March, 1913-May 7, 1924) page 587 Eck, John
Marriages:
Book 3 page 308 Ecks, Margaret C to Willmes, John 9-18-77
Book 3 page 418 Ecks, Maria E to Hoppenjan, Gerhardt H 2-11-79
Book 4 page 6 Eck, John G. R. to Bergel, Margaretha 2-10-81
I would be interested in hearing about what you learn, especially if your
people turn out to be from Ladbergen or nearby as well.

I am to find any information on any of these family lines. I know
their
roots all trace back to Germany, where I am currently living until Aug. I
have a wonderful opprotunity to do research here if I can just find more
information. Any help would be wonderful.
