Hi, I am fairly certain I have found a brother to Andeas Schitter, the
immigrant. I have the line of a Christain Schitter, b. 1819-1871, who
married Caroline Giesler in 1851, and had the following children--Joseph
(1851), Andrew (1854), Michael (1856), Elizabeth "Lizzie" (1857--md Joe
Gerber), Martin (1859), Rosa (1862--md. Joe Eckert), Frances "Fannie"
(1864), and Henry (1867). In the 1860 census there is a John Schitter (b.
1848) living with them-- John may be a nephew or he may be theirs, only
male and female is given. Caroline (1933-1880) was buried next to her mom
and brother-- Caroline and her mom Agnes died about 4 days apart.
Christian is buried next to a Guckes--so Caroline and Christian are not
buried together. I can find no earlier info on Christian, although I am
not through snooping. Does anyone know anything about this Christian
Schitter? And can someone do a look-up in the 1850 census (which are
extremely hard to make out and read) on Christian? He is not living with
Andreas. And the Schitter name is spelled many ways. Since the folks who
took the census in 1850 were not aware of the German spellings and probably
couldn't understand the Germans anyway (since few spoke English), names
came out many, many ways. Schitter could even be Schuler in 1850.
Thanks so much for your help. Helen Zuber Keusch
