Maria & all,
Although not a Ward of Court in India, my ggrandmother is shown as "when her father
died Miss Trotter was the ward of Col. Young and the Hon. W. Bethune, member of Supreme
Council 1847-50" in a family tree given to me.
Her father "William Trotter died 30 October, 1846 aged 32 years in Scotland".
Isabel Adelaide Trotter would have been 11 years old when her father William Trotter (born
& married in Bengal) died. There was a Scottish Orphanage in Calcutta so could Col.
Young and the Hon. W. Bethune been Trustees/Governors of that or of another institution?
Bethune did endow some school in Bengal.
From a page of Burials at Scotch Burial Ground, Calcutta 1861 are the
29 July 1861 Mary ..... 11 years Ward of the Scottish Orphanage, Dropsy
3 August 1861 Anne Lewis 4 years Ward " "
15 August 1861 Rhoda ... 6 years Ward " "
Does anyone know where there is more information about the Scottish Orphanage?
