Your Rev Samuel Percival should be listed in Crockfords Clerical Directory
which I think were produced annually. The latter ones are likely to have
more data on his career and where he was posted etc but it is worth reading
as much as you can get hold of because the information varies from time to
time. There should be a few available at the Adelaide State Library.
It's also possible that your man was sent by the Society for the
Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) and if so records are kept by the Bodlean
Library at Oxford University. I suggest SPG as I had an ancestor who was
ordained around the same era in Madras. There is a P Percival who was
ordained in Madras as per “The Mission Field” Vol I, 1856 USPG Periodical
Pages 152-156. Original Document is held at Rhodes House Library, Bodlean
Library, Oxford University, England.
It is also possible that he went to University in UK and you could check
Cambridge & Oxford for his entry. May be On-Line now!
There are a number of other Missionary Societies who were active in Madras
at the time but Crocksfords may be able to clear up where and if he studied
at a university.Regards

Subject: [India-L] Rev. Samuel Percival
Hello again Listers
Rev. Samuel Percival was apparently "deaconed" by the Bishop of Madras in
1856 and "priested" by the same Bishop in 1857. He subsequently came to
Australia where at least three children were born in Bombala, NSW in the
1860s and '70s.
Where could I find information about the "deaconing" and "priesting"
Mylor, South Australia
