Years ago I came into possession of two volumes of the Mishcat-Ul-
Masibh; or, A Collection of the Most Authentic Traditions Regarding
the Actions and Sayings of Muhammed; Exhibiting The Origins and
Customs: The Civil. Religious and Military Polices of the
Muselmans. Translated from the Original Arabic, By Capt. A.N.
Matthews, Bengal Artillery. Calcutta, 1823. Both books are somewhat
wormed, but otherwise the bindings, pages, and covers are in fine
condition. I had both volumes (approx. 9 by 11 1/2) library boxed as
a preservation measure.
Now then, are you at all familiar with this work? I went on the
Internet and learned a little. The thousand plus pages are
"invariably wormed." Few copies were printed, and fewer made it back
to England. It is regarded as a rare book. I think a couple of
libraries in the UK have it. I have been thinking of getting rid of
it, but I don't know if such things have a market at all.
John - I had this message from my old MHS friend in the States, Dick
Kern. I don't know if any Lister can help with his query, but if you
think someone can, could I ask you to put it on the India List? Many
thanks - James.
