Penni, the FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Madras Army
I suggest you look at the records called "Registers of Madras Army European
Soldiers" which are available on LDS microfilm.
Details on the Fibiwiki page.
Probably first look at the film for 1840-1850:1885891. I think this date
range is when they joined the Army, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Subject: [INDIA] Films for Madras Army records
I am looking for army or army pension records for John Connolly. I have not
found his date of birth, death or even a marriage record, a bit of a mystery
John and Mary Ann Connolly appear to have had at least 6 children starting
with John Connolly born 31 Mar 1850 (listed as John Connelly). I currently
have film number 521848 and have been through it several times but so far
cannot find John Jnr. Some pages are very faint so it could be that my John
is on one of those.
What I do have so far is Baptism record of two of his children, one born
17/11/1853 in Bangalore which states father John was a "European
Pensioner". Record for another child born 15 Apr 1857, Bangalore states
father was "Pensioner". This indicates John was not in active service when
most of his children were born from 1853 to 1863
I have searched through the Family History Catalog for films relating to
the Madras Army records. I am not sure of the film/films I should order to
continue my search for John Connolly.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
