I am desperately trying to find information on my g.grandmother Matilda
Mead's family. She was born in Bombay, India in 1859, was listed on
the 1881 England census as a housemaid at Brown's Hotel at 21, 22, 23,
24 Dover St. London, Middlesex, England and was married to James Curtis
in 1884 at the registrars office in Croydon, Surrey. From the marriage
certificate I learned that her father's name was William Mead and that
he had been a soldier in India and was killed in action. I went to the
Family History Site and was able to find just the one William Mead
listed below. I've looked on FIBIS and a few other sites too but he is
all I could find so I guess I will try working with him for awhile to
see where it goes. It would be nice if this William Mead was the only
William Mead who was a soldier in India but somehow I doubt it.
If this William Mead is Matilda's father, that would make him over 40
years old at the time of his death and I am thinking that would make
him a little long in the tooth to be a Private in a foot soldier

British Army Casualty List

B.261 Private Mead William 66th Foot Killed in Action Maiwand 27-07-1880
Does anyone know what the B.261 means?
Can anyone suggest sites to go to where I might find information
(military or otherwise) on this gentleman?
According to the standards of the time was 40+ too old to be a foot
