In the 1860's and before India was often noted as the East Indies or India.
I would suggest that Ein was meant to be just that, and the wording British
Subject often accompanied the notation.

Does anyone on this list know where Ein is? In the 1861 census, a
birth place is described as "Ein (a British subject)." I assume this meant
place out of the country. In view of the family's connection with British
India during the Raj, I suspect it was a place name there.
