Subject: Wheeler Gomes and Chaves
As my emails to the Chaves family in Australia have been bounced back, I
would be grateful for anyone linked to the Wheeler Gomes or Chaves families
of Calcutta. I am keen to learn more about my mother's father, Harold
Henderson Clarke, who apparently ran the tote at the Calcutta Race track,
and was a billiards and bridge champion. He died tragically young in 1930
Elsie Chaves, born Gomes, was the sister of my maternal grandmother Ellen
Celest Wheeler Gomes - they lived in Calcutta.
Elsie married Harry Chaves, according to my aunt Leonie.
Ellen, my grandma, married Harold Henderson Clarke and they had three
daughters: my mother, Veronica Blanche, and her sisters Gloria Victoria
Marie and Leonie Joyce (who is still alive). All three eventually came to
the UK, although my aunt, Gloria, who worked in India for Group Capt Leonard
Cheshire, died shortly after arrival.
I am the only child of my mother's marriage to my father Sydney Saunter.
Gloria married James Marshall and had two children, Christine and Michael.
Leonie married Stan Pilgrim and had one child, Mark
Any leads to family connections and history gratefully received.
