There have been some amazing records posted recently, with many thanks to Maureen.
Having a reference book online with pages one can turn was fascinating.
I may never find reference to my Indian GGGgrandmother, born in Bangalore, but I keep
Has anyone found the birth of a boy in Calcutta to "the lady of Joseph Alexander
Caldwell"? The lady died in childbirth.
I know this is a long shot and I have written about it before, but I am aware that there
may be new people in the group. Did the Caldwell family exist? or is there anyone
related to Joseph Alexander Caldwell?
My GGGgrandfather was Major Joseph Alexander CONDELL and I have all I was able to find
about his time with the HEIC available in the British Museum (cadet, 1810, in India), but
nothing of his private life while he was in Madras or fighting elsewhere. He retired,
having been ill(?), and sailed home with his two half-Indian children in 1836. One was my
GGGrandmother Mary Agnes Alexander Condell and the son took the surname Alexander, joined
the navy and I have found nothing more about him. Their father's will was useless as
he did not mention his children. He had left them with his sister in Staffordshire and
married in Aberdeen. He himself was born in Madeira so there may be a Portuguese
connection. One member of my family thinks there was a Persian connection but none of
them ever knew who the mother was or whether she had died by 1836. Of course, my family
said she was a princess!
Best wishes for Christmas
